"The real album" HAHAHAHA! Imagine if it had ben released the other way round with the 11 track version being the main release and the 20 track one as a bonus collection of outtakes and vague reworkings. How many über fans would be banging on about that being the real album, the director's cut version only for the hardcore? There are some nice (vague) reworkings / less-edited versions here that makes a nice bonus CD but doesn't justify the heavy price tag. The tracks rather than reworked just sound unedited. The PLCLCpc and Phlyopn are barely distingishable from the originals, maybe 12" versions in the old days. Perlence Range 3 is an improvment on the "official" version butjust fizzles out at the end rather disappointingly. Nobody but nobody needs another version of IO, the worst track on the album by far. SonDre-ix is just awful, throwaway cod-horror soundtrack. Tankraken takes the main meaty beat, which sure, is a good one (or a thousand beats, if you're Sean) and just runs with it in a slightly different way and again just fizzles out. fol4 is less intrusive than the "original", giving it more room to breathe. It sounds like a good track buried under some "F.U.C.K" filter set to 11. Which is fine. 11 mminutes of it going nowehere is no fun though. How about an 11 minute version of paralel Suns or Altibzz?
The original album version of "90101-51-1" is far superior and one of the highlights of the album. This "bonus" version just sounds like it was recorded through next doors wall. "chenc9-x" sounds like a longer version of "chenc9" (oh great) "noufour.x" is nice, but sounds like Berlin period David Bowie remaking SAW II.

Somethng for the collector, sure, and there's nothing particularly wrong with that, but mad people suggesting this is the "real" album have spent so long listening to Draft that their faculties in regard to to music and the ability to recognise being fleeced by marketing have long since been fused by exposure to the radiation emitted by huge mechadroids fighting it out on alien civilisations while new impossible universes are born ever nanosecond yadda yadda. I don't think this reveals any of their process ord evelopment, it just sounds like lesser-edited versions of the album proper. Still, nice metal sleeve case.
"Quaristice" is a brilliant, brilliant album. If this material had been released as an EP ok, but I suspect the audience for this music is dwindling and sales figures are maintained by fans buying the vinyl, the CD AND the limited edition AND in some cases the Flacs before the physical release (potentially the same album 4 times in total) Which, without knowing anythng, I'd say was more Warp than Ae's fault.
Nice idea but I think it rather tarnishes Quaristice's epic reputation. No wonder there was only 1000.

I basically agree about the main point. It certainly wouldn't work as the "real album", at least not by itself as it is. It doesn't have much of a flow or a closure. The 20-track Quaristice flows really well from beginning to end.
But, I disagree about IO which I think is brilliant. And if you're not expecting things to be too different, this CD works well.
But the "real" Quaristice this is not.
Most of the tracks on the 20-track disc already contain the relevant information extracted from the longer tracks, which makes these longer versions feel just what they are: extended JAMS. I think their shorter versions work in many cases just as well - it might just take a few more listens to take in all the beats and grooves when the running time is 3-4 minutes. No time to "let it sink in", as there is here, with more repetition.
And yes, a few of the tracks actually sound better on the second disc, much better, and for this reason I still think they should not have deprived the rest of us from being able to purchase these versions. But they must have seen piracy coming, so I guess that's their choice.
I'm very happy with both of the discs, though, and I think they complement each other nicely.

heres why i think the bonus album is brilliant. ae always know how fickle and over-critical somee of their fans can be. they also know that these fans can not accept ae's newest release until the next one comes out. so this was a clever way to get those people to flip around and like the quaristice album again. well played.

Yeah, I really like that one much more than the original.
The others are either new or too close (but longer) to the originals for me to tell, and my brain is on melt down.
I do prefer listening to the original on principle, because they edited to be that way for a reason, I suppose. The other disc is a bonus, a curiosity, but it's no replacement for the album.

the later half of I O (mons) kinda reminds me of the later half of Surripere
Maybe, this bonus disc was there rough draft of the album, then they decided to redo the album, shorten the songs, and add a few additional songs to make the official album. It's my theory on why it took 3 years to make Quaristice. It's probably not true though.

i think Fol4 is one of the most interesting experiments autechre has done in a while. It appears to be based on one long field recording of what sounds like a train station with a lot of reverb. It starts off pretty raw with not much editing going on but as it progresses the whooshing reverb sounds start being shortened and turned into snare drums through enveloping and what sounds like a train track break squeak sound quickly turns into a tapping ride cymbal like hi hat rythm. then a strange doppler effect sound almost sounding like a commuter train gets turned into a very mutated AE melody.
Also good use of turning raw samples into eery pad like sounds as well. i find this song very fascinating. Instead of editing little bits and samples out of a field recording, it sounds like they have made an entire song out of rearranging and amplitude trickery a stereo recording

Yeah, exactly. At first I was listening to this and thinking it was just mildly interesting, but nothing special. Then as the field recording morphed into what you're describing, it became one of my favorite tracks of theirs in a while. Some really interesting stuff going on there...
