can some computer savvy geezer lend a helping hand?
i appear to have fucked up my resoloution settings running an amiga emulator(WinUAE). monitor just goes into standby, saying 'system over range'. have tried safe mode which works fine, but changing the res back in that makes no odds, tried system restore, no luck, scouring the internet for help now, but most of the advice seems to be what i've already tried.
any help would be magic. cheers in advance.

I'm not sure if someone has suggested this already, or if it could have anything to do with the problem, but a while back I had a similar problem with a program that forces higher refresh rates than your monitor can supposedly handle.. It worked for my friend's monitor but mine would only display the 'system over range' -style error message and nothing else. I'm not sure if this could be your problem, but perhaps WinUAE forced some weird refresh rate on your monitor? I think I solved the problem simply by rebooting, so I guess that wouldn't work for you. Just trying to suggest things others might not have.
Have you been able to get any resolutions in safe-mode to carry over to normal-mode? Or is it that every resolution you try just displays the error message?

have you tried uninstalling your graphics card driver from safemode, then booting into normal mode?

first try not only altering the resolution, but also the refresh rate (hz). Then, if that doesn't work, uninstall drivers.

Yeah I think Grahf's suggestion might yield some results. If you uninstall the video drivers from safe mode, your video card should still be able to run in basic VGA 256 colors mode, just so that you can get back to normal-mode and download new drivers and perhaps new directX.

cheers for tips.
has pissed me off a bit tho. i know it was probably me being careless, but a software app shouldnt be able to dick around system settings like that.

What were you playing on the Amiga? I don't like WinUAE too much I just use WinFellow for the Amiga 500/600 games, I wish there was a way to play North&South online!
If you don't need AGA try using WinFellow as an alternative, playing Amiga games with a Sega Saturn gamepad is nice.

I agree completely. I think there's a suspension of wariness that comes naturally to software; people just expect it to work without causing system-crushing errors, and rightfully so. I felt the same way with that refreshforce program.. When my friend was explaining it to me, I thought to myself that it probably isn't wise to force your monitor to refresh faster than it is rated to, but I figured it just had to work. I then found out the hard way that I was incorrect in this assumption.

I'm referring to final version software in that last post, of course. Alphas and Betas are another story entirely.
