oh, this shit again?

for those who don't know what this is, stsanders overdubs
himself playing guitar to videos of real guitarrists. some
find it funny. it makes me cringe. :|

I didn't even look at the video. It wasn't very funny.

God, guitars are so boring and one-dimensional. Sampled
farts are more interesting - probably :)

I want to kick this guy's ass for being so good.

He Drives Me Crazy

Seriously, if you could play guitar like that, landing a
girlie or two any given night wouldn't even be fair.

He's over-rated. I could out play him with my eyes closed
and my penis clenched in the gaping jaw of a Rotweiler
whilst being stabbed in the back several times by an out of
control bitch.

This is the best guitar playing I have ever seen. Its not
showy, no slapping the guitar, just amazing picking. Its
bluegrass so you might not like the music, but I do. You
can't deny the man's talent though. He doesn't even look at
the strings

wow, that was a real treat... Why does it seem like the
general level of talent in the 60's and 70's was mountains
higher than it is now?

offline Barcode from United Kingdom on 2007-10-24 18:12 [#02137326]

Maybe because you judge "general talent" by what you see on
TV.

My remark was not in regards to talent I've seen on TV, but
musicians in general. I wasn't trying to sell any current
artist's talent short, but rather point out that, for the
most part, mainstream musicians do not seem to be as
talented or try as hard (one or the other) as artists of
previous eras. I don't mean to imply that there isn't a
wealth of incredible talent still buried in the underground,
but compare today's mainstream rock bands and pop acts to
those of 20-30 years prior and you might begin to see where
I'm coming from.

bah, screwed up tag. the only thing that should be
italicized is "for the most part."

Cause 30 years ago it was about how good you sounded, not
how good looking you are. If you happened to be both then
that was just plain luck. Mtv was the start of making it NOT
about the music.

Virtuosity isn't everything though is it?

I think what's really lacking now is ideas and imagination.

You have loads of people who can probably play technically
as well as Hendrix, but will never be as exciting or
original.

the 60's and 70's were all about rebelling in every way. So,
maybe that's why the broke ground on so many things back
then

Never cared that much for Clapton's actual guitar work, but
he has been involved with some great groups and songwriters.
Props. His solo was the worst part of While My Guitar Gently
Weeps though.

guitars have been done
let's not go back to them
stick to hendrix, spanish classical, death metal, funk
rhythm hooks
and move on to TECHNO (in the original sense of the word)

Music composition should start with the composition of sound
-before any rhythm/melody/harmony or god forbid lyrics

offline Barcode from United Kingdom on 2007-10-25 09:15 [#02137463]

I mean it's not like Clapton can do anything you couldn't
have done. It's just drive, ambition, practice and
motivation - he wasn't born good at playing guitar, it isn't
genetic.

It really depends on how interested you are in doing
something, if you are completely obsessed by playing an
instrument or doing practically anything in life then
chances are you will be better than 99% of other people who
aren't so obsessed about it. It's just that the vast
majority of people cannot be bothered to utterly devote
their lives to one thing in particular.

offline Barcode from United Kingdom on 2007-10-25 09:17 [#02137464]

In the physical sphere you can be genetically advantaged
over others, but playing guitar doesn't enter into that
category.

How do you account for people born with what seems to be
innate musical talent, i.e., children who can compose or
play instruments at very early ages? Mozart wrote his first
symphony before his ninth birthday. Yes, he was a rare case
and I don't expect that everyone would be born with that
level of ability, but I think some people's brains seem to
be configured or "wired" for a certain skill. In this case I
would say that genetics has a fair bit to do with it.

well you see the soul of an old time blues man entered eric
claptons body and thus gave him his supernatural ability to
wank a guitar

still rips better than Santana

abraxas and caravanserai are important and good albums, in
my opinion. His style is a bit boring after a while, but in
the early days, he wrote some bloody good tunes.

he's not very good.
