Downloading music from myspace

A while ago, I discovered a method of downloading tracks
that artists put onto their myspace pages. Myspace tracks
stream at 96kpbs/22khz through the player, but what most
people don't realise is the original MP3 which you uploaded
isn't actually physically altered in any way and can be
accessed directly. The result is all these fancy promos that
artists upload to their sites can be downloaded without them
realising.

I've seen a few tools online which automate the process, but
they only seem to download the STD file (which is the 96/22
version myspace streams directly), but through simple
manipulation of the xml document, the full-quality
originally uploaded file can be accessed.

I downloaded and listened to the new Harmonic 313 tracks by
Mark Pritchard and it got me thinking how shitty this could
be for the artists if unscrupulous types realised this and
downloaded/shared their music before its released.

Just a tip: if you're putting music on myspace, encode the
mp3s to 96kbps to avoid these kind of problems. Oh and if
you don't believe me, link me to your myspace page with
music that you uploaded at full quality (192+ for example)
and i'll show ya its real :o)

and how does one download the original songs?
of course, im only asking cos some artists put up unreleased
songs and whatnot on their myspace sites, and we get out of
it is the 96kbps mp3s, which sound like ass.

1) You need to get the user id of the account/myspace page
you want to download from. This can easily be done by
accessing their page and then clicking the "send user a
message" button. In your web url, you will find something
like the following:

http://messaging.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=mail.mess
age&friendID=4094700&MyToken=4c7c2a0d-0762-441a-91e9-df37fc
90ca08

The number after friendID= is what you need.

2) The myspace player has its own url which parses an XML
document. Basically, this is all the key info in your music
player. The URL is:

http://mediaservices.myspace.com/services/media/musicplayer
xml.ashx?b=USERID

USERID is of course the number of the account you want to
access.

3) An XML/text document will now load. This has a lot of
infomation regarding the music player, but you are looking
specifically for the following:

durl="http://cache10-music01.myspacecdn.com/73/std_4c6951aa
9ba0387d5c0be1540c5ec720.mp3"

This URL lets you download the 96k recompressed version.
However, if you change the std text to full like so:

durl="http://cache10-music01.myspacecdn.com/73/full_4c6951a
a9ba0387d5c0be1540c5ec720.mp3"

You can download the original MP3 which the artist/label
submitted to the myspace site.

Oh and I only post that with the hope that you'll all encode
96kbps mp3s for myspace in future.

Thats crazy, cheers for the heads up.
So now im forced to put my new music up on myspace at shit
lo-res mp3's
and fade them early, which is a pain in the arse. I put them
decent quality so people could maybe get more of an idea of
what the tracks are like as they always sound shitter coming
off the player. Someone at Warp warned me last week that
people are rinsing tracks straight off myspace.

Mark,

I'm not 100% but I believe that streaming from within the
myspace player is at 96kbps/22hz, but streaming from outside
your page (aka if someone adds one of your tracks to their
profile) is better quality. Regardless though, theres really
no need to put high quality / vbr files on myspace as the
user would never appreciate the sound quality anyway after
myspace bastardises it.

Yeah its crappy really but this is the reality of myspace.
It is a stinking sack of shit with more security holes than
windows, but its still undeniably an excellent tool for
promotion. Oh well, the tracks are fantastic anyway sir so
i'm sure plenty of people will buy em regardless!

Nice one.

so this only works if you are able to download the file in
the first play, but wants the altered (full) version..
doesn't seem to work with artists that has bloacked download
in their profile..

haha yes. I should rethingy my tracks because I wouldn't
want my record label getting pissed at the fact it could
impact my 0 sales figure.

Yes, but if an artist uploads pre-releases onto myspace (and
lets face it, they do) only for someone to steal the track
from myspace without them realising only to distribute it
through traditional p2p methods, the sales for that release
when it comes to retail will fall. Especially if the track
takes a few months to be released (and for independent
labels, it probably will)
