on this site. They might say. If I knew I'd tell ya. But
I'm just plain dumb...Huh huh hu hu...Not really but,

Contrary to popular belief... aphex twin was NOT the first
person/people to make this kind of music.

And I don't think something like a genre name for any kind
of music can be traced down to a single source. I find that
things like that usually work themselves into place thru
more than one person using the terms.

I know it comes from the 'Artificial Intelligence' series
but I don't know who first used IDM.

ahh! good point trevor! but that came out '93 and i wasnt
aware of the term IDM until about 4 years ago, it was just
called electronica (usa) or techno(uk)

I think the first use of the term was when the IDM-list was
created. IDM is/was not a genre name, it's the name of a
mailing list.

What is IDM?
How can I categorize my own music as IDM?
What are my requirements?
Someone answer me before I go completely fucking spastic.

IDM is a rather obscure term to me, but what different name
could be applied?

well RDJ tried to have 'braindance' and warp tried to use
'electronic listning music'. I couldn't care less about
genre titles though. If someone asked me what types of
music I listen to it would be easier for me to say "I don't
listen to 'nsync or the backstreet boys."

yeah i would just say i dont like pop

I wouldn't want to say that I don't like pop because some of
the music I listen to could be considered pop. ie. The
White Stripes, The Dandy Warhols, Jamiriquai,...

"The Intelligent Dance Music mailing list was set up in
August of 1993 by Brian Behlendorf and Alan Parry as a
platform for the discussion of a wave of what was termed
"Intelligent Techno" originating mainly from the UK.
Initially, the idea was to create a list dedicated to the
Aphex Twin but it soon became apparent that there was a
whole lot more going on that we felt was worthy of
discussion. The most obvious example of this was Warp
records Artificial Intelligence series which brought
together various artists whose names are now at the
forefront of the new wave of electronic listening music."

Grenre names do come from single sources, that's what's
called as "coining." The main example i can give is an
artist, and friend to, Throbbing Gristle said that "it's
industrial music for industrial people," and thus the grnre
indiustrial was born. Most people know about TG practially
inventing industrial anyways. Also, there's the coind phrase
that michael jackson is the "king of pop" that come from
when he either had to anounce an award, or recieve one at
the grammies (god know how long ago), and he was introduces
as the king of pop, and it just flew.
