I really really shouldn't have listened to it. Now I know
120% that I need a Machinedrum. Anyone selling theirs for a
rediculously cheap price?

that's wicked that, not that there isn't some other decent
option but there is just NO OPTION AT ALL against the
machinedrum.

i mean is there any drum machine that would offer you just
1/10 of those options?

cool sounds cygnus - i love those high pitched crackles
throughout it. the ending is dope. just those high-hats piss
me off a little bit.

I thought, the little clicks at the start, surely the Korg
ER-1 can do that. Thing is, it actually can't. It has two
sounds, hard hitting DUMPH DUMPH DUMPH DUMPH rave sounds or
soft electro I'm a robot sounds. It can't do complex
synthesis. Argh.

you know the weird thing is that after so many years
companies still try to get the 909/808 sounds like this
would be the only kit in the world to use. only yamaha with
their an-200 and dx-200 with fm synthesis rocked hard but
are now very hard to get because when someone already has it
he just won't let it go.

i'm so sicken tired of those two drum sets - i always try to
make my drums sound as interesting and different as
possible.

as i couldn't find a drumbox that would fit me (the sps-1 is
to far away when it comes to costs) i started to go into
software - and there - the same shit 909/808. reaktor 5
users try to make the best emulations instead of coming up
with new ideas.

Google "Drumatic", yes it is slightly TR based, but it can
do some pretty interesting things VST wise. I'm resorting
more to using full synths for my drum sounds both in
software and hardware (the Alesis Ion is great for drums).

Tried something clicky with the ER-1, turned into a kinda
track. The bass arp is my microKorg fed with the ER-1s MIDI
notes giving it a semi random feel. The lead/drone is my
Alesis Ion fed thru my Numark EM260's Kaoss Pad.

those clicky sounds are quite interesting. sounds like
autechre 2001 live at the very beginning of their set :P

tell me how do you liek your ion? i'm thinking of getting a
micron for myself.

IMO the Alesis Ion is the BEST VA going around at the moment
for sound, price, control, etc.
I bought my Ion for £400. I don't know how well the Micron
compares (obviously it has less control) but it DOES have a
drum sequencer that the Ion doesn't!

the micron has the same engine - besides you can change most
parameters from pc editors - there are a few floating on the
net. that's even better for me - i like it more to use it
like a micro modular you know - making patches at home and
using those 3 knobs on stage for the most important
features. besides i can use my diy midibox for additional
tweaking.

the thing that bothers me - how is the sound compared to the
microkorg? especially when it comes to "fatness", greasy
basses etc.

the thing is - the only thing that i would use a hardware
synth for are fat bass leads. i mean i intensively used two
synths until now - the novation x-station and the waldorf
microwave xt (sitting now right besides me) - the thing is -
the waldorf should actually be more interesting soundwise
because it has jsut much more options and a much more
complicated soundflow. but the thing is that i hate it -
it's based on wavetables so it sounds far from analog - the
filters start to scream at high resonance rates but in a
digital way, distorted. and when playing at really low
pitches, you can hear the aliasing coming in. the x-station
being much simpler just caught me with it's fat bass sounds
and those dirty filters.

i mean now there are so many good software emulations
floating on the net that can emulate nearly everything and
doing it very good - just look at the new ni massive with
it's wavetable design (i hate that soft btw.) - it sounds
more raw, more lush than the waldorf will ever. but now
emulation will give me the fatness of a good synth with some
good filters.

so summing up - the only thing that i need a synth for is
fat bass sounds. - i know - the microkorg has it - does the
ion/micron too ?

hahaha I find that the mK is very very very weak compared to
the Ion. I think the only sound I really go to the mK for
now are pads. It's good at those. I probably don't use the
Ion for them just because there isn't an easy to find simple
pad preset hehe.
To be honest I think you should get the Ion instead of the
Micron. I find the live control very important. I guess it
depends on your uses, etc. etc. Also, check out the Micron's
multitimbrality and polyphony, they should be the same to
the Ion, but just check.

Thats still an opinion. I put my micro q against your ION
and the ION will get pwned.

You are right tho. The MicroKorg sucks when stacked beside
the Ion. The only thing the Micron Doesn't have from the Ion
is the realtime controllers, but it has the sequencer/drum
machine that the ion doesn't have.

at the end of the day, synthesizer preferences are just that
- preferences

who gives a fuck if someone's MD will kick the shit out of
an ER-1, or Micro-Q will anally fuck an Ion?

the point is, if you like the sound of it, and you put it to
good use then that's all that matters

even though i have some gear, i know that there's people on
this board that kick the shit out of me in terms of what
they can do.

lets all just remember that gear preference and "which is
the best" is subjective

just like time

:)

so how are we all finding it living in 1984?

Your just defensive because of the Microkorg comments. :P

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2007-06-10 14:43 [#02092167]
Points: 9958 Status: Lurker

But a micro q can anally fuck an Ion, due to its extremely
complex modulation routings, combing filters, and wavetables
(and very high quality analogue modeling oscillators). The
Ion will kick the life out of a microkorg strictly on its
ability to do physical modeling, three oscilators and
sophisticated filter types.

My Moog will rape the shit out of any of them because its
awesome.

i'm not being defensive at all honey-bun

if i were i'd have said something along the lines of "you r
teh suX0r, microKORG rulz all, i'm 1337 and ur 5|-|337"

but no, i said what i mean - gear is a preference. just like
anything else.

hurrah for diversity!

imho the microwave xt is owned by every synth that i had my
hands on still being a german product, orange, having
encoders, a few genious inventions in it.

why ? - the filters, the volume of the line-out and the
digital sound of it.

could you maybe post a few samples from the ion/micron and
the microkorg which in your opinion show the real "soul" of
them and are complex or at least use a lot of the gear?

the problem is - i would really want to have one of those
but i couldn't find a store where i could try them live :|

futureimage: you can get any sound out of the machinedrum
that you can imagine.. for layering you can only have one
trig position, but if you use the sequencer and hit
stop->start you can layer as many sounds as you want, create
really deep sounds.. i can't wait until i have a
monomachine.

I'm sorely tempted to get an ion. The main factor stopping
me is that I don't have room for it.

I really think it would slot in very nicely with my evolver
desktop.
I get so annoyed with the monophony of the evolver
sometimes, 8 note would be lovely. I think my setup would
be complete with an ion:

mpc1000
evolver desktop
akai s5000 sampler
decks and records
4 octave midi keyboard
outboard fx and stuff.

to keep it on topic, I wouldn't touch the sps-1 with a barge
pole..I'd much rather get the little sid box thingy. all
together now. blleeep blooop bee dee dooo daaaah bleeep
blooop bllaaah

Agreed. While I respect the SPS-1 for its sequencing power,
I do not really feel it would sonically fit into my setup at
all. However, the monomachine is a different story
altogether.

Depending on what you want to make, I might suggest one of
those 6 voice DCO synths that were so popular to compliment
your setup instead of an ION. All depending on what you want
to make. The Ion is so finicky when it comes to sequencing
its parameters, you might as well not have them.

Good.

Its just with the machine drum, every sample I have heard
from every user has had very well done sequencing, but the
sounds have always been a bit thinner than I like.

However, I have been very impressed with the monomachine.

equipment that is interesting will have lots of videos (look
for machine drum or 777 videos and you will see what I
mean). Even the micron has a good amount of videos on

I think I need to explain why I can't stand the microkorg so
much. The sounds it makes are pretty much of the same
calibre as most of those free VST plugins you can get on the
internet. Thats fine. But with hardware, you should come to
expect something interfacewise if it brings you exactly what
you can get on a computer. And the microkorg has a very poor
interface. Matrix programing with half-action minikeys.

Here are just a few. Most of these will end up costing you
less than an ION, and are analogue, instead of polite VA.

Roland Juno 6/60/106
Roland JX3p/JX8p
Korg Poly800
Korg DW8000 (not DCO, digital waveforms, but analogue
filters)
Korg Polysix
Korg Poly61
Oberheim Matrix 6
Kawai SX240
Sequential Six Trak
