reading documentation, thinking, experimenting.
many people swear that hacking code written by others is best, but I think it is harmful. ie, it makes you dependent.
also, c++ is a complete piece of shit. Do not use it without good reason. If you want something simple to play around with, try python.

well, start small, develop ideas, learn techniques, experiment.
Coding isn't meant to be hard; it's very easy, in fact.
Coding well, like doing anything well, is challenging.

I don't recommend c++ !
Furthermore, I have no good advice for it. I learned the language by reading the reference cover to cover. This was perfect for me, but that's due to my personality, and also I already had lots of coding experience.
browse amazon for a book whose summary and reviews suit you, and buy it. For an inexperienced coder, I think a language BOOK is better than random online documentation. In particular for a shit language like c++.
Python, however, since it is open source, has good online documentation, sufficient for a beginner to learn from.

a musical bass lline involves many complex factors, such as different pitches and beats, and consequently it is a difficult thing to reproduce automatically. it may vary depending on the rhythm, chord progression, style of music and the character of the musician. sometimes it can take the role of a low melody, then it might outline the chords or become a strong rhythmic influence in an ensemble

Hey guys. Try not to be dicks. He seems to be genuinely intrested in learning how to program. Making fun of someones English skills on an internet forum is bad form, seeing as a good part of the people who talk here speak it as a second language and everyone needs to start somewhere.

lisp is another language. Basically every language has ways to control audio. If you want to learn general purpose programming, and want an easy start, go with python.
there are languages specially suited to making sound. Not just max/msp and PD, something called 'processing'.. I come across new 'multimedia' languages all the time.
you haven't been very clear as to what kind of programming you want to do. what I listed in the second paragraph are much more 'high level' than regular, 'down and dirty' languages.

lisp is an old, dynamically typed, dynamically scoped functional language. There have been lots of revisions. it is still occasionally used for AI, since it can tweak itself.
it was created by John McCarthy, a great (and OLD) AI researcher.
it stands for 'list processing', because everything in it is a list. even the expressions.
it uses prefix notation.

no lisp is not like python at all it can be used to control audio making things which have all been written as C AFAIK .. if u want fast running DSP stuff, write it in C ( not C++, not necessary until u put it in your host ? ), im sure someone will chime in saying assembler for something is faster but yea, dont fancy that myself.
i reckon if u havent done no prograaming before, learn something like Reaktor, CSound, Max/MSP/PD/Jmax, SuperCollider 1st,

Actually, for making vst plugins, starting in something like synthedit or synthmaker (where you can do code) might be a good place to start. Also playing with useless scripts in visual basic is a good place to get yourself acquainted.

From pics I've seen of max msp, dog belch, it's so high level that you just visually drag stuff around as far as I know. Python seems to be exactly the same as c++ except it makes it easier on you by not having you deal with low level BS, taking away annoying brackets, and changing some commands like 'print' instead of cout (which is less cryptic). Also you can see what you made instantly in the shell or whatever its called. This thing seems to have a hard time working with firewalls. But it's basically the same stuff doing loops such and such times if such and such conditions are met. I never used the sound functions. It is really fun once you get inside of all the cryptic bullshit and actually get stuff working and feels like a miracle when you finally do. But just knowing you'll run into some complete brick wall of a retarded problem half the times you try something, for new people, makes it hard to have a pick up and play feel.

Ha ha, I was just playing zdoom and somehow the entire screen went black except for some blue weird blocks. I managed to quit back to windows only since I memorized the menu and was navigating it in the dark and now windows is all flipped 90 degrees counter clockwise... even moving the mouse down makes the curser go right on the screen. And I restarded the computer and it's still like that.

Oh, cool, if you press control + alt + up/down/left or right the entire screen rotates...
wait, that's not cool- it's fucking annoying since this damn keyboard makes doing that accidently easy especially when playing doom.
