saw a video of it earlier today.. they're all "super-new technology like nothing ever seen before!!!" but then it's just that reactable thing that's been around for ages...

i must say it, it does look pretty cool to be able to just place devices on it and for you to be able to transfer files between them as if they were physically there
although i think it'd be pretty useless for more than, say 5 files, since how would you visualize them on the screen?
ok, it works well for one or two things, but with the design paradigm they've got going on there, if you were to have a list of items and then drag them to the device it would break away from the whole design aspect.
but then again, whoever said GUI's had to be cohesive?

Did Apple not demo this shite a while ago after stealing the idea from someone else?

Well, the iPhone has a "multi-touch" screen... if that's what you're referring to.

yes. history is repeating itself all over again. apple buys a new technology and 5 years later m$ claims victory over having developed this entirely new technology all by themselves.

it's identical with the reactable - calling it a screen is a bit of a joke because you have to buy the whole box underneath too were all the cameras are installed.

with the small difference that it will cost about 100000000000 and the reactable is free

But the real question we're wondering.
can a coffee table that cost $10k be used as a coffee table and not some random videoscreen. I mean really... look at the coffee table you own... is it ever TOTALLY CLEAR of stuff?
Mines a mess.... for 10 grand I would want that thing to walk around and serve coffee.

Mine's usually clear, bar a couple of coasters. I find the trick is to have a shelf (the same size as the top of the table) underneath, where you actually put the magazines, bottle opener, tissues, etc.

the device is a gimmick--MS trying to hop on the multiple-input touchscreen bandwagon. Technologically it is a dead end; iirc they had cameras inside, which means that the approach can not be sufficiently reduced in size to come into come use. Stated more precisely, someone will find some other detection method, some layers below the screen (for instance, clear screen and detector (this already exists) and some probing light to detect occlusion and receive some weak pattern), that will obsolete their approach. I should say, however, their method getting visual information is novel, though obvious.
wankspeak mode off.

Another thing to note is that you couldn't really work on this for extended periods of time; your neck would start hurting. The best position for a screen is slightly below you, tilted upwards so that when you have your head in a comfortable position relative to your body when sitting, you "rest" your eyes on the screen (The eyes "rest" a bit downwards from looking straight ahead).
