if i were to go to England (not London specifically) and wanted to rent a car at an airport, would it matter which one i went to? I'm basically looking for the cheapest flight, but i dont want to end up in a complete shithole, where driving will be a nightmare for some odd reason.
Why are there 4 flippin airports anyway? Jesus!

I know london is very expensive, but it is the cheapest flight destination in england thanks to easyjet and such.
Places i really want to visit:
cambridge, oxford, perhaps north into the lake district, manchester, wales, cornwall and stonehenge.
I doubt i'll be able to stuff all that into a 2 week trip though but i'll see how far i get.

Luton would be your best bet then.

Yep, Luton. Nice, small airport with all the basic facilities you need.
From what I remember, there are some roads in the process of reconstruction around Stansted.
Also, check Ryanair for flights to various UK cities.

yeah, personally I'd recommend that you fly to somewhere like East Midlands - that'd be cheaper. The thing is, your itinerary covers such a large distance that no airport seems particularly suitable. Consequently, there doesn't seem to be much point flying into a London airport because you'll definitely pay more.

Agreed East Midlands Airport would suit your trip better. 2 hours to Manchester, 2/3 hours to Wales, 3 hours to the Peak district & 3 hours to Cornwall. (rough times depending on traffic.)

I know you can get amsterdam flights to coventry airport for very cheap, and that puts you nicely in the middle. It doesnt sound like london is very convenient for you. from coventry you could conceivably go north a bit to manchester down through wales into cornwall in a reasonable amount of time. thats what I would do I think.
there is manchester airport too, and liverpool. I dont even know about east midlands airport... there are too many! I dont really know about renting cars but I'm sure you can find out.

you can also get to doncaster/sheffield from amsterdam (did it a fortnight ago) very cheaply. It's about 45 mins north of East Midlands.

also, the peak district is under an hour from East Midlands, not three hours as stated above.
