Hm, I'm not sure if that's the case - the English language is being eroded rather than evolved: not all change automatically means a step forward, and the shocking ignorance of the simplest rules of English is not progressive, it's just shocking ignorance.

I'm not sure either but I feel this way of thinking stems from some kind of linguocentric (!) posture. Maybe not if you're talking about sheer grammatical nonsense, but for exemple : why is American English seen as a lower form of the language when they're not afraid to create new handy words or simplify the spelling of unnecessarily complex words, bringing them closer to actual pronunciation, as it should be? How is this erosion?

Right. I'd tend to agree. I usually don't believe in synonyms but I'm sure you could find an exemple of a completely redundant word. But even then, I'm not sure why you'd want to fight it. If it really is an exact synonym, what's wrong with using it instead?

there are usually no nuances added to a phrase by bastardizing one part of speech and turning it into another.
i'll get thinking about the completely redundant word.
and yeah, English has plenty of synonyms, perhaps more than most languages, due to its mongrel heritage.

Synonyms are great. They add fine shades of meaning because of their origin, politeness level, syllabic rhythm, onomatopoeic implications, mouth feel and so forth.
There are no bad words or phrases - only bad writers.

In addition to that, most synonyms aren't really 100% synonymous to the words they're synonymous to, if used correctly.
