I bet this would work. I got this idea after seeing the
dukes of hazard car being sold on ebay:

1) buy such an item that a lot of people know and care about
like the dukes of hazard car
2) go on youtube or something and show a picture of it and
you out in the desert with a sledgehammer where nobody can
find it, threatening to destroy it unless you receive 10
times the amount you paid for it in donations.
Even better, you state you will give the car to whoever
donates the most. This would have many people donating huge
sums of money competing to be the one to donate most as
well as
people donating small amounts to have the
combined total within your '10 times as much as you bought
it for' demand.

Actually it should be more like 100 times what you paid for
it. The main hurdle is the initial capital to buy the car or
item for this stunt. It's sort of like a legal (since you
own it) kidnapping where nobody gets hurt and only rich
people who wouldn't miss their money anyway get burned.
Concealing your identity might be wise if possible, but then
again people would need to trust that you'll keep your word;
maybe you can have a neutral third party like a bank or
something give credibility.
And you'd have to post the story and link to the donation
site on digg/slashdot and every other major memestream.

You've probably all heard of the 'million dollar homepage'.
If not, then look at this fool who basically had the genius
of exploiting the media and stupidity of humans for a huge
profit:

LAZY_TITLE

He exploited about every memetic system (ebay, news, blogs
that linked to the news).

ok i think it's smart, i'll add this:
you'd better get some actor to come out later saying he did
it. because you'll be found out and stalked by media the
rest of your life otherwise. you will split the profits with
this guy as follows: he gets all the money from interviews,
you all the money for the car

maybe im overthinking now though

That's good thinking, sort of that bearded guy that pretends
to be aphex twin.
