You own all the music gear in the universe it seems.

Only some music gear. I end up selling it as much as I
obtain it, because I need something to do with my money or
else I don't end up wanting to work. Here is a picture of my
current setup.

I just ordered a fatman from Paia, so as soon as I receive
that and build it, that will be my sixth synthesizer. I will
be painting the case of that red and black, and making it
look soviet. Then I am going to work on collecting more
moogerfoogers.

Oh yeah, the nord lead 3 is no longer part of the setup.

I pretty much don't know what any of that stuff is...

(Here is all my gear: modplug tracker (free))

Like, basically, does this stuff allow you to record sounds
you contruct directly into that computerish doohicky
(instead of recording through air via a microphone).

How much do you think all that costs together, maybe if
bought used approximately.

I've never used any hardware (except a pc) and am not sure
if I even like music in a conventional way to get that
serious.

Yes. The mixer allows multi channel recording.

Why is all the stuff better than software; because you can
alter sound easily with knobs or something?

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2007-04-19 21:14 [#02073862]
Points: 9958 Status: Lurker

Thats subjective of course. I equate software to
pornography. If you want to be able to see it an hear it
without touching it, its the most logical choice. But if you
prefer being able to touch it and feel it along with all the
headaches that accompany it, there really isn't much of a
choice. Then again, women are expensive, and porn is cheap,
or free if you choose to ignore the law.

Interesting fetish you got there; thanks for sharing. Remind
me not to borrow your equipment though as it probably has
cum stains on it.

before.

That's because my mom is an eggo waffle and it makes perfect
sense for eggo waffles to be covered in cum stains.

I will try to do some loops for posting tonight.

Here is one of the JX3P being run through the quadraverb.

Keyboard

I rarely finish anything more than the occasional loop, and
even then I rarely save. Its not that I am lazy, I just
don't make music for the sake of finishing anything. I just
like fucking around with sounds ;)

Don't you like to build up into more complex organizations
which would require saving (or a single really long period
of time). This minimal thing alone is nice; I guess hardware
has better sound quality than software.

I don't like seeing music as a 'work' so much as something
that is an experience that is cheapened through the act of
saving it, more or less. Well, its more that I am so
antisocial I don't like the idea of people partaking in
experiences that I find personal. But sometimes its nice to
show off what I have ;)

tody i start a worshop in digital audio with reason.
apparently it's based on the "teaching music with reason"
course but with more topics. i hope after those two months i
suck a lil bit less

thankgod I am not the only one who fiddles around making
sounds and not trying to finish stuff. It's really relaxing
after work to go out for a walk, have some dinner, then sit
down with the hardware for an evening of synth noodling.

I also realised I often enjoy sampling records and finding
superb hidden choice drums and snippets more than actually
using them.

if I ever did release an album it would blow your minds Im
sure.

Taxi: did you sell your evolver for the poly one in the end?
I sample the hell out of the mono one I have and do it in
wonderful poly from the akai :) Evolvers are such good fun.

Also you seriously need to check out the JJOS for mpc1k. its
so much better than akai os and its almost stable now (far
less bugs than latest akai)
JJOS look at the screenshots at the bottom of the
page!

good god man

theres no such thing as sucking at music . just because you
are not getting a record deal does not mean that you "suck",
the world of music and sound is so ridiculously big - record
labels and deals and artist reputations have probably less
than 5% to do with it - it is all about the sound

music has nothing to do with record labels and
reputations... etc, etc. its too big and its so powerful
and its way too meaningful. who the fuck cares.

do you think a congolese drummer who makes dope beats 7
hours a day cares about his reputation or what people think
about what he's doing ?

Polyevolvers are pretty awesome. I am going to be buying a
monoevolver keyboard. I used to have the module, but the
interface annoyed me so much I sold it. They can do pretty
much any sound you want, given your skill level. Using the
modulation facilities, you can take it from authentic
sounding vintage 'old' synthesizer to IDM mess with a
movement of the modulation wheel. There is no limit to what
you can do with it, or how good it can sound. You can even
sequence the tempo of the sequencer.

That said, I prefer the overall sound of my moog to the
evolver, so it is practically limitless, but still not the
'best'.

My suggestion would be to see it as something to work
towards and not something you should be. Nobody gets as good
as they want overnight, or ever. Even the people who are top
of their game are always getting better, and I am sure are
capable of seeing just above their current skill level.

The trick is to not throw money at it just to buy gear that
will make you sound better. It doesn't happen.

Which Akai polysynth do you have? I have been lusting after
the one for a while now. Apparently they use the same chips
as some of the prophets (which are the precursors to the
evolvers). I think its the six trak which is the prophet I
want the most right now.

no when I said akai, I meant the S5000, a SAMPLER! its got
64 voice (i think) polyphony so I often layer up evolver
sounds in that to produce absolutely monster programs, as
I'm sure you can imagine add a bit of reverb and delay and
grin like a mad man!

did you have a look at that link? the jjos is so fantastic,
it has literally doubled the usefulness of the mpc.

Are you thinking of the AX 60? About ten years ago I used to
jam with a keyboard player who had one and left it at my
place between jams. It was awesome to fiddle around with. I
got some great Vangelis bladerunnery tones out of it.

The stupid fucker later got rid of it and bought a cheap ass
rompler because he wanted more realistic piano tones. :-(

I have looked at that JJOS before. I still am not too
interested yet. I probably will sometime in the near future,
but its not in the cards today. I don't want to change my
workflow at all right now.
