news article

I'd be interested in what the belgians of this board have to
say, especially if they're in the flemish-speaking region.

I wasn't aware that the language was such a contentious
issue.

well it is quite annoying that either people from Limburg or
Belgian can talk and understand dutch very well, but always
talk in their own dialect which can be very inunderstandable
to dutch people. Especially in a job where you have to talk
to dutch customers alot, how annoying is it to run up with a
flat tire to a garage in holland, and ask if they can fix
the tire and the guy fucking asks me if i want zuurkool met
worst for good measure.

i have to add to that: maybe firing someone over this is
alittle bit harsh.

welcome to belgium lol

for the flemish, language IS an important issue, they (well
it's not generalized, but the gov tend to have that kind of
attitude) feel kind of insulted if you live there without
speaking well the language (that i understand)
they passed (or tried passing) a law to enforce and control
homes and families with nearly privacy-invading and
discriminating techniques like coming at your home for a
surprise test that if failed you were obligated to follow
paying courses to perfect your level

the problem is that they wanted you to have such a high
level that many people (mainly foreigners) weren't given a
just chance and were kind of 'forced" to go away

it's a really touchy issue sometimes, specially when
elections are coming, and they are, federal elections the
10th of june :D

it's going to be sad, again... ^^

ultimately this is not about language. this has been a thing
in holland too. it reminds me of this time i was appalled by
these ten politeness rules a city proposed to its citizens.
along nine great rules some fascist had snuck in you had to
speak dutch in the streets, like even when you were just
walking there as a turk with just turkish friends for
instance.

however in a factory it's quite different, if only because
you'll have to do what the boss says.

however too this is also a flemish - wallonian issue.
because that led to right wing crap like:
