[Game] Stalker Shadow Of Chernobyl

I just wanted to say this is an excelent game. Kind of a
Halflife 2.5 though. Its got the same atmosphere, only its
got an open ended story, and an extremely open environment.
I have been having a blast with it. Been shooting
poltergeists and zombies.

The AI is awesome. It tries to outsmart you and everything.

I concur.

The behaviour of the human enemies is very unpredictable.
It's almost impossible to outmanouver them around a larger
obstacle. I get an adrenaline rush when I know that a bandit
is behind a large armoured vehicle, because I KNOW THAT HE
KNOWS and he will deffinately move the other way, or will
he....

I've never seen such good team work either. Enemies seem to
drag your attention from their mates who are sneaking behind
a bush.

The only real failure in this game is the economy which is
completely out of balance - I've got too much money.

Agreed. The first time I played it I was extremely
disappointed, because I thought the AI was crap. I didn't
realize that when the person was shooting through the door,
they were shooting where they thought I was, and that they
would get distracted and confused like human players. It
wasn't until I noticed that they would send people around
behind me if I was standing behind one obstacle for too long
a period of time, and that the second time I played an area
it was a totally different battle.

Fighting in this game requires strategy and wits. You can't
just walk in and start shooting everyone you see, because
your gun might jam, and then you die. And the fact that the
weapons each have their own subtle qualities.

Yeah it's a good one, but I also agree on the economy.. and
it also sucks that there isn't any god damned sniper ammo on
sale anywhere... I don't agree with the AI being good.
People keep walking into anomalies and they're often
squatting and hiding in plain sight. I also hate how bandits
respawn infinitely even though you clean out their camps.

From what I understand, stalkers are equiped with anomaly
detectors and indeed the only people I noticed walking into
anomalies were bandits and it happened during a fight.

I myself walked into an anomaly twice during a scurry from a
humongous pack of dogs (near the entrance to the Dark Valley
from Garbage).

I don't mind bandits reoccupying their camps in time, but
spawning during missions (for example in the unfinished
factory in Dark Valley) is indeed irritating. I killed a guy
in a staircase there and the substitute appeared 2 meters
away directly in front of me.

However, I've just met a Poltergeist and the thrill of
fighting the supernatural is back, big time!

The guy who's the leader for that first camp in the garbage
walked straight out of the camp and into one of those that
spin you at high speeds right after the first protect the
camp misson.

I've just noticed that my reputation is "terrible". How is
that?! Is it because I've killed 10 stalkers already or
because I often do not care to collect payment for the
missions and fail them?

I think it depends on the faction you help.

I guess I'm helping Duty, because, my only encounter with
the Freedom faction was when I entered the area north of the
bar and witnessed a slaughter of their patrol performed by a
group of mercenaries. I tried to help but they were too
strong and I kept dying.

Do you mean that the reputation depends on the faction your
adversary belongs to? That would make a lot of sense, I'll
check that.

Yeah. I helped freedom, and I've got a great reputation. The
duty guys seemed a bit evil or whatever, plus they attacked
me for no reason in the city. I don't think reputation
depends on your adversary (who is that?), but rather, I just
don't think people like Duty very much.

If you walk past their roadblock to an area they think is
freedom, they will start to attack you because that area is
off limits.

They're bloody annoying. I got deep into a sort of a
underground base of theirs, killed maybe 50 of them before I
got killed.. they seemed to spawn infinitely in the last
room. Shame, I kind of want to kill them all off...

Hm.. It's kind of short, though, even with all the extra
stuff and exploring I did.. the end is a bit too focused on
one thing, you don't get to explore the chernobyl plant
enough...

Are there more than one?

Anyway, it was just a bunch of flashes that didn't make
sense.

The story wasn't particularly good for this game, not
something you actually got immersed in, but the world itself
was fun to explore. Fun enough to make me actually finish
the game, but I'm not going to bother playing through it
again just to get different endings.

There are 7 endings and only 2 of them are supposed to be
good, the rest reveals what was wrong with your stalking or
something like that. If you didn't get a choice in the end,
I believe you got one of the 5 minor ones. Lame Mastah.

I wish my PC could run this at more than 10 FPS. For those
that have played Deus Ex and System Shock, how does this
compare? This seems very similar and there were some aspects
of those games I'd like to have modernized, yet they still
haven't been topped.

I haven't played neither Deus Ex nor System Shock, though,
but that's what the game made me think of, especially with
the menus and stuff like that.

Wasn't there a rumour about a Fallout 3? Maybe this is in
fact it? Who made these games?

Yeah that too, I love post-apocalyptic themes. It looks like
Deus Ex game mechanics in an open-ended Fallout gaming world
to me. but I haven't played it yet (besides, DX/SS2 share
many character development concepts with Fallout and other
RPGs). I thought it would be straight Quakey FPS but now I'm
very interested.

Saying Stalker is similar to either part of Daus Ex (I
haven't played SS) is going too far, but during some
sequences (sneaking for example) I often get a Deus Ex
feeling. I'm not as immersed as I was in DE:IW, but there
are certainly less things that annoy me. Remember the
atrocious physics? Or the general feeling of awkwardness?
The setting is more reminiscent of Fallout, or the movie
"Stalker" if you will.

is amazing...

It's a good game.. one of the few things I disliked was how
quickly firearms' durability would degrade. They sort of
artificially shortened the life of the weapons, but it's not
too big a deal since you're usually finding new weapons, or
you can just pick up a replacement off a dead guy who
carried the same gun as you. It was only majorly annoying
when you had one of those custom modified weapons, as they
were few and far between.

Also, for those of you with performance issues, try
reinstalling the game and updating the game to the latest
patch... it optimizes game code pretty well, gave me at
least an additional 10-15 Frames per second over the 1.0
version.

i love the underground areas of this game... They're so eery
and suspenseful, I nearly jumped out of my seat fighting the
mutants for the first time. I admit, the game effectively
conjures a strong sense of dread in me at times, to the
point where I have to take a break (and a deep breath,
haha). It would be cool if Doom 3 was this scary.

i like this game a lot!

haven't played video games for a long time until recently
going through HL2 Orange Box and now this.

the only other series which felt that scary/immersive was
Silent Hill. i often forget to quicksave for a while, then
die.

modular weapons, trading, looking for stuff, all great!
great!
HL2 felt like a simpsons episde in comparison.

I like to play insufferable games till the end, but I
couldn't bring myself to finish this one. It's aimlessly
open-ended, hopelessly serious, it's slow and ugly, it's too
mean, too dumb, joyless and generally depressing. It made me
feel bad and it makes me feel bad when I think about it.

why would a game like this want a scoring system? - terrible
idea

the fact that its open ended and depressing are both pros in
my book.

has anyone played clear sky yet? its getting average reviews
but i hoped it would be sorted out with mods n patches.....

the scoring system thing was a joke >_<

the open-endedness made it feel more like a job than a game
-_-
like most open-ended games, it's thoughtless and repetitive
; go to a place, kill a guy, come back and do it again
°-_-
i'm also not a big fan of being depressed, especially not by
cheap, trendy bleakness, but maybe that's just me ¤_¤

hmm i'm near the end now and it sucks. too many enemies, and
my suit is totalyy worn down, getting radiated all the time.
mechanics now are: quicksave, and then (in like 8 seconds)
use anti-rad medicine, kill like 6 armored stalkers, and
search all of the bodies for medkits /new anti-rad. repeat
in next room before radiation kills me. impossible, boring.

I struggled with money. I think I was too readily using
bandages to stop the bleeding, which cost a fortune. I never
really understood how that system worked.
