I used to enjoy watching his Weird Weekend shows on TV, and have two of the DVDs (including the awesome Wrestling one). It's good to see him back on the telly, documenting odd things.

i'm a huge, huge fan. i'd only seen his nazi one when i was about 18 or something, and the past in the past 2 weeks, something random reminded me about him, so i downloaded as many as i could. been watching them since - and then it came up on bbc news that he'd be doing a documentary on the Phelpses and Westboro Baptist church! i was delighted. a really good one it turned out to be too.
he's an absolute legend and i love the stuff he produces.

that last episode had a good subject matter, but he never really seemed to make a decent argument against the phelpses. He simply tried to pick apart individual cases rather than actually question their belief systems.
i've always thought he was a bit of a penis, to be honest, although i do enjoy his shows.

Absolutely. That one the other night was completely insane. He's a very clever guy, I think his hapless demeanour actually suits this more serious subject matter than the more zany stuff. Having said that I watched the gangsta rap episode a few days back and it had me laughing out loud.
I envy his ability to keep the hapless, 'harmless' impression thing going even when faced with quite nasty, offensive views... its one thing to not lose your rag when someone says something deeply offensive but quite another to remain amiable. Redrum where'd you download them? I heard that he did an episode recently about Las Vegas or something, I'd like to catch that one...

I think their entire philosophy was so beyond reality that it would have been futile to even try to dismantle it, to be honest...

i saw that one. he was staying in the casino hotels, interviewing the "i'm not a gambler" gamblers.
demonoid seems to have a few episodes, if you do a quick search.

Nice one.
This has just made me think about the Neil and Christine Hamilton episode - the look on his face when they tell him they've been charged with those sex crime accusations, hahaaha.

Hes an English documentary maker who is famous for being a bit (purposefully...) naive and geeky. Quite funny at times.

i wanted to see if they could actually be forced to think for themselves though, rather than repeat the monotonous 'god hates fags' for a whole a hour.

A combination of both. He's not out making frontline war documentaries or films about penguins. More of a Social Documenter. Oh, and mainly about America and Americans.
His one with Jimmy Saville caused me to become nauseous.

So if it's social phenomena, does he allow people that are part of the phenomenon their own voice and does he add to their voices in the form of theories?

Its generally not too 'intellectual', as Marlowe says, its more just documenting unseen members of fringe society... he generally just focuses on detailing what the lives of really odd or extreme characters are actually like on a day to day basis.

Of course, his subjects are given full reign to showcase themselves, with the odd piece of verbal encouragement/probing by Louis in person, and a slight analysis of the situation by him in the form of a voice-over.

yeah, it's always subcultures or oddballs though.
for his most impressive work, i'd reccomend the one one on nazis, drunken mastah. the ones on thai brides and survivalists are rather good too.
clint - there was a dump of about 8 AVIs on the web until yesterday.. all dvd quality. afraid they're all gone now :/ there's some eps on youtube and google video though.

I've been meaning to watch his shows. His dad is a great writer and I can only imagine Paul Theroux's offpsring as being capable of something good.

In some of the episodes of weird weekends he acts like he's mentally handicapped or something, specially in the Black Nationalism episode.
My favorites are: Demolition Derby Wrestling Infomercials <- the best of the series in my opinion.

I believe it's a ploy to appear non-threatening and non-important, therefore making his subjects more prone to revealing truths about themselves. I believe this is the main reason he is so successful at producing interesting programmes.
