just curious to know of which people are making music on here, and what tools they use. do people who make electronic music generally know how to play a piano, or do most of you trial and error it? whats the best program you've encountered for mixing and mastering, is it protools all the way?
ive just finished my latest song, could do with some friendly criticism, direction and advice... if you can be bothered, if not then just ignore this bit :P its the first song at http://www.myspace.com/underredchaos called withdraw. used ableton live rewired with reason, with help from a sidstation and a slight bit of guitar... all turned into quite a darky sketchy mess really! lol, i just cant tell if i'm getting better or not. either way i only do it for fun really. its amazing how much time can disappear when you're doing that sort of stuff.
cheers people

I use Ableton Live 5. I can play drums, piano (and any other keyboard instrument), bass, (a little) guitar, etc.

I think the main problem with fruloo is the sound engine. It has this "saturation" effect (for lack of a better word) that might sound good if there was a way to vary it throughout the mix. It's like a subtle mush sound and i think it would work better if it were morphing or inconsistent. I'm using 6.0 so I am not sure if the more recent releases fix that. I was thinking of using fruloo with max/msp so the max/msp sound engine is used instead of fruloos but I got that idea like 6 months ago and I've yet to do anything about it. I still use fruloo though. I use mostly 8/8 patterns and I try to keep it within the 333-720bpm range. Seems the higher bpm stuff surprises a lot of people when I tell them I made it with fruloo. Probably since -> more complicated --> harder to hear shit rendering (even at the highest settings 32 float and 256 whatever is still shit.)
The other problem is that it's so easy to make music in it, that I hardly care how anything turns out. It's easy to muck around in it and make whole tracks in 20 minutes. If it were more complicated I'd probably care what the music sounds like, since I'd have to work harder to get the same results. If every track I made in it was a process I'd probably be drawing customized samples in soufor for each track with a pen tool or something equally meticulous. Not to say it's not possible to do a lot with the program, I just think that the program is frowned upon because anyone with basic computer knowledge can easily make something resembling music in it with shitty generic preset sounds and there's really no incentive for deviation (seems like it's more implicitly encouraged to sell the software to the layman.)
I think aside from the above stated, the mental context of having instant structure is kind of limiting for the creative process. I think it's because familiarity has a way of triggering old patterns of doing things within said familiar context. If the program had a more obscure open-ended architecture, it would always leave you uncerta

[If the program had a more obscure open-ended architecture, it would always leave you uncerta]in enough to shake off any habitual tendencies that can make you lose sight of new ideas. Other than that, fruloo is great.

I learned the piano classically and came from folk and classical music into all this electronic wonderousness, and I think it's really helpful to be able to improvise on keyboards when you're making a track because it just speeds things up a bit. I do think people who can't play instruments can still create amazing music, obviously. You just need an imagination and an ability to use some tools.

oh and response to the original questions. i had piano and cornet/trumpet lessons when i was little and i doodle on the guitar and pots and pans. as far as mixing and mastering goes i never mix anything properly, let alone master it. ive just started using protools but havent heard or seen any benefits yet.

hmmm
using ableton to mix down just seems to lack something... i can't quite put my finger on it, but it always ends up sounding a little bit flat, and sometimes a little bit quiet. it might just be my inexperience that causes it to sound that way. it could be the normalising process?
i managed to get it sounding a little bit deeper with my latest tune that i linked up there, but theres still something about it. maybe its just ableton live. or me. :)
