I haven't seen this posted yet.

Since there are a lot of UK subjects here, I was curious as
to what you think about your service men and women taken
hostage in Iran?

What do you think should be done.

Shit, that was suppose to read "15 British Sailors/Marines"

A question mark would be nice at the end of the last
sentence, too.

Give them a fixed deadline to release all of them by and if
they fail, bomb their country back to the stone age.

In all seriousness, I'm not sure. I wouldn't want anything
to happen to them because of our leaders' refusal to
co-operate with Iran. Conversely, I don't want concessions
to be made to Iran/them to be "traded", because it's not
like they were legit prisoners in the first place and I
consider it more akin to kidnapping.

Cue lots of "shouldn't of been out there in the first
place"/"forces personnel deserve all they get" comments by
heartless leftists.

I feel angry and annoyed. A) They weren't tresspassing and
B) Even if they had been, why wouldn't you just give them
back?

If only we could communicate how GPS works to that primitive
nation.

what i find absurd is that Iran first told our government
that they captured our soldiers at location X in Iranian
waters. It was only when the British government pointed out
that the co-ordinates of point X were actually in Iraqi
waters that Iran turned around and basically said "Oh
really? Oh, we meant point Y".

This situation doesn't need diplomacy or missiles, it needs
someone to say "To the people in Iran in charge of
orchestrating this mess. You've already admitted you weren't
sure where the sailors were by changing your mind about
where you found them, so that's the argument off the table
straight away. But you persist, forcing them on TV to come
out with statements like "We were trespassing, we're sorry,
and look at Iraq, isn't it time we left? Iran's fucking
brilliant, what a bunch of great guys. Poo, Britain smells.
When I'm released, not that I want to be because it's so
cool here, I've got a PS3 and everything, I am going to live
in Tehran. Hell, I might even go Islamoid", as if your
hamfisted propaganda schemes were devised by a 7 year old
with ADS. You're insulting your own people's intelligence
as well as the rest of the world's. Just let the whey faced
sailors back, you've had your five minute tantrum in the
spotlight like Kim Jong Fuck last month, I'm sure there's
some other despot in a backwater restlessly awaiting for his
turn.

Can you not make the distinction that feeling sorry for the
poor wretches who have fallen into the hands of the enemy is
quite seperate to whether or not you think we should of gone
to war in the first place? They were out there and now
they've been illegally taken hostage by a bunch of cretinous
liars as a PR stunt. Does the fact that they're out there
(even if their presence is wrong) warrant them being treated
this way? Would that attitude extend to torturing them?
"Well, if they didn't want to be tortured, they shouldn't of
joined the army/should of refused to go to Iraq."

Also bear in mind, a great many forces personnel are against
the war in Iraq and never wanted to go. Unfortunately, once
you're signed up, you don't have much choice in the matter.
Yes, they could of refused to go out there, but what would
be the outcome of that? A spell in a military prison, with a
reputation for deserting your company in a time of need? I'd
take my chances getting shot at by the enemy over that,
personally.

BTW, I nominate Dog_belch for the diplomatic service!

it's a pity, the lads in tehran are complete fucking idiots
for doing it, they should release them as soon as possible

It makes me think of Jonothan Yeah? in Nathan Barley, and to
paraphrase what he says, stupid people think it's real,
which is cool, and clever people think it's so heavy handed
and pathetic it must be a double-bluff, also cool.

the Ahmadinejad administration makes me really sad. they act
in such a manner that perpetuates, on both sides, all of the
confusing shitiness that they stand for. i can't help but
feel like the Iranian people have been taken hostage.
i really hope this doesn't lead to war. it seems too fucking
inane for that.

Of course I can make the distinction, but that doesn't mean
the two are totally unrelated. Of course it's crap that they
got caught, but they were indeed stupid enough to
join in the first place which affects my attitude towards
them: maybe they'll learn something from this.

The Brits don't have a moral leg to stand of course, what
with our illegal invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan (not to
mention countless others throughout history).

Unfortunately for the service people they are being used for
political purposes, first by the UK, and now Iran.

But luckily for them they haven't been hooded, sexually
humiliated and had electric nodes attached to their fingers
a la Abu Graib.

In the words of Menzies Campbell -

"Whatever the rights and wrongs of military action, British
forces in Iraq are now there with the authority of a UN
security council resolution... and the Iranian government
should be left in no doubt of the serious implications of
their action."

I agree with that 100%

Just because it's an UN sanctioned action? I'm pretty sure
they could've done more with diplomacy. I was at a lecture
by Hans Blix a week back and I got the impression he wasn't
satisfied with the current political stance on diplomacy. He
also suggested doing, as the AU does, including (or at least
not excluding) those who "do wrong:" engaging them in
diplomacy even when they aren't doing what you want them to
instead of excluding them may actually accomplish something.

Ming the Merciless is it?

When someone begins with "whatever the rights or wrongs..."
they've already thrown morality out of the window and I
can't work from that premise.

Is that 'Meet Military Singles Today' ad at the bottom of
this page serious?! Surely whatever marketing company these
people employ aren't doing their job properly. I don't
imagine many IDM geeks are on the lookout for military
singles. Though I invite anyone to correct me.

They all received nice gift baskets from their recent hosts,
jolly nice. I'm sure if they hold a few US soldiers, George
Bush would call up Chuck Norris to sidekick Iran all the way
to Outer Mongolia.
