It's shocking that someone so talented and hardworking has only just now been recognized for his work. The man has created some of the most immediately recognizable cues in movie music and changed the course of pop culture.
I think he's a genius for the way he can encapsulate emotion and mood in a melody. Sure it's emotionally manipulative, what he does, but that's exactly what you want in a memorable movie theme. If you're not affected at least a little by the theme music from, say, The Mission or Once Upon a Time in the West, you should be buried quietly before you start to smell.

By "only just now been recognized", you're referring to the Academy Awards. He's been awarded & nominated many many times.

Oh, heh, I'm an idiot, then. I thought they generally gave lifetime achievement awards out of guilt to people who'd been passed over in the actual year to year competition.

Tubular. Countless ubiquitous classics, and while I hate the movie his theme from Salo is one of my all-timer favorites. I can't believe he never won an Oscar.

Soundtrack to the Mission is absolutely brilliant. My father would often play it on sunday mornings. So nice to wake up to!

Ha! How interesting.. that soundtrack always strikes a chord with me too since my parents used to have the vinyl and play it quite often when I was a youngster.
I was thrilled to see him get honored as well... (despite the utterly nauseating nature of the Oscars in general..)
