Go and listen to "The Lark Ascending". It is beautiful.

Then the man has soul, I know that much. It's so nice
listening to Mr. Williams after indulging my poor ears in
lots of atonal and serialist music.

I like it, but it's too long. If any lark took that long to
ascend it would have been bagged by a passing bird of prey
for sure.

Vaughan Williams is a fun listen when you read about him.
Most 'classical' music at that time was based on Germanic
phrases. The timings of the melodies were based on the blunt
german way of speaking. Vaughan moved his melodies into
english timings, using the national anthem and regional
timings.

He evokes pride in me without the negativeness.

haven't listened to this piece of music for a long time,
perhaps worth digging out.

oh, interesting!

I know that Sibelius' melodies often start on downbeats, as
the Finnish language typically places accents on the first
word in a phrase.

It's very interesting how language can have such an effect
on something like that. :)
