Normally, on my keyboard, pressing CTRL+ALT+[vowel] produces the vowel with a grave accent (á for example).
Does anybody know how to change this so that the same combination will produce vowels with umlauts instead?

Would it make sense that if you already have one combination for á, then there would be another one making ä? In other words, are you sure there isn't such a shortcut already somewhere?

I have an umlaut on my keyboard and so I go shift - umlaut then hit the vowel. Thïs döësn't hëlp yöu ät äll, sörry.
Does this though?

it would make sense, but this is windows, so common sense doesn't prevail.
what i'm doing at the moment is putting all the special characters at the top of each document and copying and pasting as i need them, but it's very cumbersome. any ideas?

Hmm.. That combo actually doesn't work for me, so I think it must be something you've somehow set up yourself.
If you only need it in Word, I think you can go into the "Insert > Symbol" menu thing and choose shortcuts for special characters. Then you could make ctrl+alt+shift+letter add the ¨ or something.
