Does anyone have one they like?
I've been looking at the Zoom H4 because it's inexpensive but I'm open to suggestions.
It's going traveling with me so durability is a factor.

get the marantz, its more expensive than the zoom h4 but the preamps on the marantz are nice quality and you can use large condenser microphones on it with phantom power.

The chances of me using anything but the built-in mikes is slim to none, so the Marantz is probably overkill. But I can see how that'd be a factor if you already have high quality condenser mikes for field recording.
I read this review of the Zoom that makes me think positively of it... the sound quality is pretty good. I normalized one of the audio files linked there and there was no noise at all, just clear sound.

The recordings I've heard with the Marantz don't sound so good. These mods seem to make it better though:

I just sent in for a hi-md minidisc recorder and a mic.

Does the hi-md minidisk allow you to record uncompressed wav audio and transfer it to a computer without fucking it up with DRM and compression and whatnot?

That's pretty good! Can you get decent stereo microphones for them? I guess they take the 5 volt condenser mikes. I was looking at some Sony stereo microphones a while ago but they all had shitty frequency response. :-( It's stupid because you can get Panasonic electret condenser capsules with excellent frequency response for a few dollars... of course then you have to build an enclosure and wire them up yourself.

you could probably look at the sp-04 too.. I've had a go on it, and it's not half bad. I didn't really check out the h4 properly, but this one seems like it immediately has more options if you also want to make a track in the field.

i have an edirol r-09. it works quite nicely. has a nice built in condenser mic. can record mp3-files and wav files (up to 24 bit). it's very light, you can plug external mics into it if you want. my only complaint would be that it sucks batteries like an SUV. otherwise it's a pretty nice piece o machinery. better than the minidisc recorders i've used.

The edirol looks good too. I think between the edirol and the zoom it comes down to price and ergonomics.
I'm gonna go down to the big ol' Steve's music store and look at some of these things in person. I keep reading conflicting reports about how this or that one feels flimsy.

The sp-04 has a woefully small amount of memory though. 128 megs max? Wtf?

oh yeah, I forgot about that.. It was, in a way, more when it was released, and when I tested it (less was more, go figure).. I guess they had too high hopes for the smartmedia stuff. Nevermind then.

Shiiit, I just read about the upcoming H2 which will be half the size of the H4 and cheaper ($199). Plus it will have more mic capsules built in with different geometries etc.
But it's only available in May and I need something now now now for a trip. :-(

Whenever people ask about this shit, I always suggest the boss micro br. Well, until I hear bad feedback about it that is. It has all the features you could need and more, and retails for about $250. It has a bunch of built in effects as well as granular style pitch shifting.

I got this mic on recommendation from a minidisc community forum. I was looking at this one but I was told the first one I posted is basically the same thing, just less money.

That doesn't look too bad, except that it doesn't have builtin mics. I will check it out if they have it in stock at Steve's though.
Map, the cheaper one probably has the same mic capsule as the expensive one minus the name brand and resulting markup. I'll check it out if I get something without its own mics - thanks!

I've got a BOSS SP-202 and it does everything it should perfectly! The only drawback is I wish I had a drum machine instead.
