anything else is 'too complicated' and you have to learn
bits. it's obviously shit. the 2 i mentioned are great to
try and sound like that artist you like without having to do
much.

Reason is comming out with a modular environment. Pretty
awesome I say.

I think having sex with men can produce quite good music.
But only after marriage, of course, and remember to read
theology books and look at rotting rats before you indulge
yourself in sexual activites.

fl studio is what i use. i don't often run into limitations,
but it does seem somewhat linear lately.

Ummm. Well, its a modular synthesizer for reason that you
can choose what kind of oscilators, filters, envelopes and
effects, and patch them together through a matrix window.
Its going to be named THOR, and its comming out on reason
4.0

And no, I don't really like considering reason a modular
environment. You could say the same for anything that allows
you to choose which vst plugins are going to run and
modulate eachother.

I should specify that I don't like considering the full
packaged reason a modular environment.

Agreed. It's more of a compliment of "instruments". An
actual modular reason would be very cool though (even better
would be an open source environment to allow homebrew
programmers to create new instruments, or at least port in
VSTs).

egyption lover, i wanna get some of his albums, he seems
pretty cool, but yeah ill probably use reason and the new
fruity loops when i get 500$ from these last jobs i did. a
friend is going to build me a computer for 400$ then i need
a cheap but good monitor.

ill have to say the only music programs i have purchased are
reason and reaktor other than that the shits be downloaded.
check some BT sites see what you can find.

(note: i do not promote piracy if the RIAA is reading this)
haha

For starting out thought i'd deff say Reason as the least
its a choice program, takes a little getting used to but
once you get the hang of things you can make some ill shit,
especially when you start rewiring them through programs
like ableton live, etc. I dunno about others but for laying
out tracks with samples and putting some effects here and
there Soundtrack Pro works wonders too (if you have a mac).
But on windows like everyone else has said check out the FL
studio.

are fruity loops and reason found @ stores like bestbuy or
cuircut city, or do you download them from the net?

offline whoami from Dallas/Ft. Worth (United States) on 2007-02-06 21:14 [#02046234]

well fruity loops and reason can be purchased at music
stores such as Guitar Center, if you have one near you id
check there. You can purchase Fruity Loops online as a
download, you can also purchase Reason from their website
(propellerhead.se).

I'm having too much fucking trouble with FL Studio lately.
It's the little things that get you. Rendered loops are
offset by the length of the latency in samples, if you're
using effects that have any latency.

I did an experiment where I recorded the fucking METRONOME
to a mixer track, played it back against the live metronome,
and it was OFF. With no plugins or anything. That's heinous.
I can't work with software that broken.

It's too bad because it's an amazing program in so many ways
- loads VST and DXI plugs, now has a fantastic audio editor
that does convolution, has probably the most flexible
routing and best autiomation assignment, recording and
playback of any host program I've used - but the shitty
non-automatic delay compensation and sloppiness of rendering
loops and synchronization kills it for me.

I'll check back in version 8 and see if it's any better.

My other host options I'm looking at are Live and Logic but
I'd need a Mac for Logic.

One thing I'll say about Live is it has tight timing. If I
record the output of a Reaktor drum machine to an audio
track and play it back against Live's metronome, the
metronome just disappears.

It annoys me in some of its details (probably only a matter
of not being used to it) but the essential functionality is
solid. Automatic PDC, tight timing, plays well with Reaktor
and other plugins, gets along well with M-audio gear,
extremely solid performance at low latencies and with high
CPU load. Good stuff.

yeah thats FL biggest problem. It sucks ass for live/midi
syncs. I thought it was just my copy, lol. Abelton Live
works great for that stuff.

I'd say you should try someone else's set up before you
splurge loads of cash. At least have some idea what to do
with the software, maybe do a couple of collaboration tracks
with a friend to get a feel for it.

Then buy software, computer, etc. Perhaps spend more than
$400 too........

In this order:

Fruity Loops 6 (or 7 if you can get hold of it...)
Reason 3
ACID Pro 6
Reaktor
Ableton
Renoise
AudioMulch
EnergyXT
Cakewalk Sonar
Steinberg Nuendo
Steinberg Cubase SX
Logic

I use FLoops and ACID Pro - pretty powerful combination....

you should really be able to do anything you do with acid in
flstudio, its got a lot of layers to it that i keep
discovering.

too bad it runs like shit on my macbook, prolly because of
the mac drivers for my sound card, but eh? whatre you gonna
do?

Boxed copies of Reason and/or floops occassionally crop up
at places like PC World. I was at a client's office a few
weeks back and they had about 20 boxed and unopened copies
of Reason 3 on the shelf.

Other than its instability and the lack of a "more than one
channel quantise", floops is very good indeed and there are
comparatively few limitations.

Anyone who says it's a toy can listen to Midnight Request
Line (which was made in Floops) and then fuck off, because
nothing they have made in Logic/Cubase comes close.

Reason is also very good. Ableton Live is pretty sound too.

what current music-making software is bad for making

try them all and keep the one you're happy with and that
suits your style best

I personally love Cakewalk Sonar (versions 3 and upwards)
for studio stuff and Ableton Live for...erm...live stuff.
