Hm, well, it's certainly a big step for the shinners, and without a doubt a step in the right direction. I don't quite agree with this part of the article though - to endorse cooperating with a Protestant-dominated police force that had historically worked with British soldiers to maintain British rule in the province. While the RUC was certainly dominated by protestants and, as was revealed and proven in the Police Ombudsman's report earlier last week, was rife with collusion with the UDA and various other Loyalist paramilitaries, the PSNI is something different, and not, as was previously reported, just "another name for the same old RUC." I'm afraid I don't have much respect for the Shinners or the modern IRA, despite the civil rights advances for Catholics in the north that they achieved by violent means in the 70s.. The fact of the matter is that they kept on fighting after these civil rights were won, seeking revenge for loyalist attacks (which were, in turn, revenge for IRA attacks on loyalists) and indeed seeking a united Ireland, which I view as a cause bordering on irrelevent.. Not worth fighting for, certainly not worth killing and/or dying for. Why do you ask? What do you make of it yourself? And why do you have a picture of an AK-47 as your avatar? Is violence something to be espoused? |

Why do you ask? Because you must have a better view being closer and that... What do you make of it yourself? Well, they certainly won some civil rights and some autonomy, but I think the point was to unite Ireland from the begining, and they are nowhere near that. Also in Spain there are moves from ETA in that direction, leaving the violence in order to achieve some minor political goals. I think those kind of moves leave no hope for a free united Ireland or a Basque Country. I would like to see the primary goals turn to reality, but violence seems uncapable these days to help the cause. Dunno, kinda ask for gold and pass with bronze... On the other hand, ppl has the right to live in peace and escape from a war that goes nowhere. And why do you have a picture of an AK-47 as your avatar? Oh, it's one of my nicks... Is violence something to be espoused? Violence is a tool. |

Yeah, the IRA are great friends with ETA and vice versa.. they have a lot of mutual respect.. You imply that a free, united ireland is something preferable to what we have at the moment.. I don't know - that kinda implies that n. ireland isn't quite free.. while it does remain in the UK, I don't think that's a thorn in the side of many people, apart from the extremists, and to be quite honest, the current state of affairs is far preferable to another war or terror campaign. Maybe I just think that way because I'm from the republic, but I think the majority of people up North are of the same opinion since they're just fed up of the heartache and horror of 30 years of intense terrorist campaigns. the paramilitaries seem to have decided that since 9/11, being terrorists isn't really very viable. to be honest, this is a really poorly written and disjointed post - that main thrust of what i'm trying to get across is that i'm glad Sinn Fein have decided to embrace the PSNI and that a return to the bad old days certainly isn't favourable, no matter what the aim. Ask for gold and pass with bronze? Certainly. it's just the same as with any relationship, compromise is key.. that's why i abhor terrorism and political violence - since it's usually perpetrated by the extremists who are incapable of compromise. |
