Hi there! I need to find a player that support subtitles
for example .srt). I used to use BS Player but it now comes
with a free hard to remove adware.

VLC is the best. It's free.

depends on your codecs: if you've installed the codecs even
windows media player will add the srt (if it's placed in the
same directory and named the same as the file you're
playing).

Ugh, fuck WMP. With VLC, you can either Quick Open A File
(just an .avi or .mpg file etc), or you can Open... and you
can add your film file and your subtitle file or audio file
etc. Pretty good, because you can download Audio
Commentaries for films, as mp3s, and open both with VLC,
which is the best.

Or, of course, you could play The Wizard Of Oz and use Dark
Side Of The Moon as the audio.

yes, yes, I know, I was just making the point that it
depends more on your codecs, not the player. Thus the "even"
before "windows media player."

Yarr, but VLC auto-updates, and I've NEVER had to manually
install a codec, or even encountered a "I'm too shit to play
this file" pop-up from VLC.

heh.. I mostly use mpc, but I sometimes have to use vlc
because there's something weird making the mpc window go
very very large and not play back the film, but then again
there are some times when I'm using vlc and I have to use
mpc because vlc can't handle the files (it does that
annoying thing where it "leaves" parts of the previous frame
on the next one.. it looks kind of gooey, but if I try the
file in mpc it works again).

It'll mostly be down to bad encoding rather than the
players, though, and the two players seem to have different
ways of handling stuff like missing headers or whatever it's
called.. there are a lot of people who apparently don't know
how to encode movies (I have no idea myself, but when I
check comments on the files I'm trying to play people who
seem to know something say the file is encoded in a bad
way).
