Anyone using this? Seems to be pretty interesting as a modular live-host, with some sound and programming abilities of its own... I'm wondering if there are any showstopper bugs or disabilities you fine folks know about before I invest lots of time learning it...

A friend recommended that one to me a few years ago because of its modular qualities (a la Jeskola Buzz). I played around with it a little, with somewhat frustrating results.. but I think that was due more to my subpar hardware than any real problem with the program.
Sorry, I just realized this comment was no help whatsoever. Let us know how it works for you though!

So you got some stuff happening with it, but it was slow or had crackly audio or something?

Sorry, I didn't really explain it well. Honestly I didn't spend that much time with it, I just remember it being rather ungainly. Too slow, seemed choppy when dragging modules around.. can't really remember if the audio was choppy too.. it just left an overall underwhelming impression. But, as I said, I'm almost positive that it had more to do with my outdated computer than anything, so I'd be very interested to get your impressions if and when you try it out.

So far it works okay with Reaktor and a few effects running into a mixer. Maybe that's all I need it for. I like that you can have different sync sources for different things. Smash the monochronocracy!

i love bidule. i use it a lot to have reaktor midi data controlling other vst instruments and effects. Convolution is also really easy to setup and sounds better than max/msp and other dsp programs ive used with the feature.

That is EXACTLY the kind of thing I want to be doing. I tried it in Ableton but it's broken. Most programmers of non-modular hosts just don't anticipate the users wanting to do things like that, so it's either broken or difficult to set up.
Tell me, what do you think of Bidule's other features? Have you used it to generate control data and sequences with its native components? It still seems a bit primitive and cut down in that respect compared to Reaktor or (especially) Max.

no i honestly havent fiddled much with that part of plogue and the reason is i cant figure out how to sync up bidules modules with eachother. I can figure out how to sync reaktor to bidules master clock but i cannot say get several bidule sequencers synced up with eachother. Nor can i access with call functions the Bidule modules options like "mutate" or random. If i could figure out how to do this i would use it all the time.
My favorite thing to do with it is control unnecessarily expensive sampling library VSTs with reaktor random midi scale/chord generation. I was making generative tribal drumming music by hooking a bunch of synced lfos up to VST Culture.

Some of the sequencers don't have sync inputs, which is stupid. Then again this thing hasn't hit release 1.0 yet and it's a work in progress...
One thing I'd like to see is control inputs on e.g. the granulator so you can automate the controls from another module. Or maybe there's a way to do that by grouping the granulator with a midi input and doing midi learn, but that seems obscure and annoying compared to just wiring things up.

i have to say i REALLY fucking respect the pre version 1 philosophy. All programs should abide by these strict parameters. Im extremely sick of whole number version upgrades. All major software companies are guilty of it (stienberg, adobe, NI)
yeah bidule seems to be lacking in the having modules control other modules department. Its great for chaining effects together and routing audio through it, but for routing data and controller information i usually hit a brick wall and give up. It took me a while to figure this out in reaktor so maybe im just impatient with bidule.

I registered for the Bidule forum and I'm gonna ask about chaining control signals. I hope they're planning to add it if it isn't already there, or make it easier to find if it is.
Speaking of Reaktor: one thing I discovered recently is that the IC send automatically scales signals to the range of the destination control. So if you have a control signal going from 0 to 1 and you use an IC send to send it to a knob that goes from 0 to 1000 or whatever, you don't have to worry about converting the range.

Ahhh, I see - the answer was in the second post I looked at. you send your control signal to a parameter modulator bidule, then on the main menu choose tools -> parameters and link it to the destination you want. That's a bit indirect.

I searched for this program, and I couldn't really figure out what it is..
is it like a re-wire-ish manager/environment thingie?

it can be used for multiple purposes. Id say its mostly geared towards experimental music making.
You can use it for making traditional music but the sequencers in bidule are pretty lackluster. Its really good for chaining together VST effects and instruments in ways that you cannot do in normal hosts like Cubase.
Fleetmouse, have you tried using Energy XT? For stuff like sending control signals out of reaktor and to other VST instruments i prefer it over Bidule. It has a very simplistic stripped down interface but its actually quite powerful and more geared towards traditional sequenced electronic music.
and since i also know you are a user of Reaktor 5 i had a side question for you, in Reaktor 4 i was able to send wireless control signals by going into the instruments properties and going to the connections box, down at the bottom "source" and "osc target" list all the availible instruments on the screen for selection of possible connections. In reaktor 5 i noticed this option has changed and no longer does anything automatically show up in the connections box. Is there something special i have to do to make instruments show up there for osc/wireless connections?

I don't like the way Energy XT eats up a shitload of processing power for its graphics. Just moving around a few notes in a sequencer spikes the CPU. People complain about it being processor heavy once a project gets a little bit complicated. The OpenGL rendering in Bidule is lots more efficient (you have to enable it in preferences cause some people have trouble with it so default is off).
About R5 - the dropdown is only for OSC connections coming from another computer. If it hasn't received anything from another computer, the list is empty. You have to use the to and from buttons. See the manual, section 18.5.
Or use the IC send which gives you a destination menu on the panel. You can send to a receive terminal or to a panel control.

i havent used energy xt extensively, i only used it once to realize a concept i had which was to make something akin to Glitch VST but in place of all the default effects, place a VST effect of my choosing instead of the stock ones (ring mod, flange, time stretch, stutter)
bidule is definitly a more pleasing program overall and i would love to get more in depth with it.
