which adobe product is best for creating new graphics?
Photoshop seems to be a total pain in the ass to create
things in from scratch. Is fireworks the only other offering
they have?

If you can't handle photoshop, the other products aren't
gonna be any easier, especially illustrator.

Fireworks is mainly used for web graphics.

flash is great for creating animated doodles which can be
exported into photoshop at your chosen resolution

paintshop pro x is a good alternative (i use it)

i can handle photoshop, it just doesn't seem to be very good
at making things from nothing.

It's good at editing photos, as you would expect...

No, I think he is about right on there. Photoshop is a bit
awkward to create new things. Its the shit for editing tho.

adobe illustrator is what you need, losless vector graphics,
check out the new live trace feature too. it can alo be
programmed using either flash or javascrpt to get some
interesting results, ala joshua davis.

if you're familiar with any kind of analog rendering (oils,
watercolor, pencil/charcoal etc) try corel painter, loads of
presets for traditional artists
