You know, there's something worse about state execution that makes it harder to bear than a bunch of wackos kidnapping and killing someone. It's the way the killing is carried out so... rationally, so institutionally, and everyone who is a part of the society that does it becomes a party to the act. Honestly, nothing weirds me out more than offically sanctioned brutality - executions in the west or the east, stories about forced sterilizations and lobotomies in the bad old days of state and provincial hospitals, ugh. Give me a good old fashioned serial killer any day - someone whose victims have a fighting chance - someone who can't claim that all our hands were on the knife with his. |

They should have added under "Surviving the gallows" about the English chap who had abnormally strong neck muscles and after 20 minutes hanging they had to cut him down and the executioner had to finish him off with a pen knife! I don't see why hanging should be anything other than long drop these days, if indeed, it should be used instead of shooting or decapitation at all. I think we should actually bring back the guillotine, unless I'm mistaken, it's still meant to be the must humane/instantaneous/painless way of executing people. I think it was probably dropped because like most things, the populace's perception of it ("It looks gory and brutal, hence it must be inhumane") is more important than (and very different from) the actuality. |

I've never heard that pen knife story before. There is the instance where a man survived three attempts (the maximum allowed) and had his sentence commuted to life imprisonment. The pen knife story sounds a bit suspect. |
