It's a shame this place is not a refuge for "idm" geeks,
actually. There's nowhere to go to discuss the anal
intracasies of a drum track in an Autechre track, for
example. Hell, it's not even cool to like this damn fucking
music here any more.

hmmm, i remember the autechre live gig thread consisting
mainly of pics. people constantly asked for the music and
were disappointed by the short reports on it...

as an excuse i would say not everybody here finds it easy to
talk about music in details because they havent studied
it...

even though i constantly made music for 2-3 years
i dont know all terms and machines,

having worked with jeskola buzz and having two djing friends
(not idm though, breakbeats and dancehall) helped me a lot
here and im having fun picking up new words to properly talk
about music, but the real pleasure comes with listening.
and recommending music here works sometimes at least,
though i got to admit people are talking a lot bout
non-electro in this place...

Hell, it's not even cool to like this damn fucking

I don't even know if anyone's even
making it anymore apart from the old guard who are slowly
but surely calling it a day and some new pretenders covering
already well trodden ground.

Is there any genre of music where that isn't happening? At
least the retreading of old ground is still producing some
enjoyable results in this relatively young form of music.
When there's vast armies of horrid sounding rock bands
invading the airwaves, I'm quite inclined to be forgiving of
any electronic music, derivative or not.

"I'm quite inclined to be forgiving of any electronic music,
derivative or not."

It's that exact way of thinking that nurtures all this
crappy music, be it rock, rap, IDM or whatever.

You took that comment out of context. It's obviously much
more enjoyable to listen to music that doesn't sound like a
pale imitation of something else, but attacking "idm" in
particular for this seems silly when the problem is far more
prominent in other kinds of music. *imo*.

It seems in like that in most music to me, I'm not singling
out 'IDM'. It's all signifiers and nods to other musicians
strictly within their genre. Pointless unless you make a
living from it.

IDM will never die, like Napalm Death style metal or Prog
Rock, there'll always be a niche for it, and the vast
majority of the audience of each niche are all doubtless
practicing the same niche style of music themselves. Look at
poor Osilsik, gamely collecting his drumboxes, making the
same sounds but none of the music. Look at the local
bands here like Deathcock, all growly vocals and shitehawk
guitars.. it's like folkart, but rubbish. And, as Jivs says,
unless you're making a living out of it, what the fuck are
you really doing?

Yes. IDM (or electronic listening music) never recovered
from Jungle / Drum n Bass. What was meant to be the future
(Electronica) was suddenly superceded by something that
sounded 1000 years in the future (DnB), which was far more
sexy and appealed to more people. So bad IDMers fell over
themselves to reclaim Jungle but with an A.I twist
(ARTKORE). Then as quick as night follows day, DnB was about
as exciting as yesterday's teatowel, and IDM was left
holding its cock, suddenly not quite so clever, having
backed the wrong horse. And in true wankers fashion, unable
to accept they were wrong, like a lot of people here,
instead they stuck to their guns, a la Squarepusher, hoping
that if they kept making the same shit for 10 or even, god
help us 20 years, people would forget that they weren't
artificially intelligent enough to not get fooled by some
passing musical fad.

heh, luckily I was never into d'n'b and I've never really
enjoyed SquarePusha. Not that I'm claiming to be the world's
best electronic music producer. I just make the music I like
to make; doodling.

I'm not sure there's a need to look at things like that.
It's easier to just see it as making what you enjoy to make
and listening to what is enjoyable to hear. It's impossible
to keep track of what genre is what anyway. By the way, you
mentioned sexy music, and I'd like to say that Jimmy Edgar's
live set is very sexy.

I think anyone citing any of the lesser rans of the
increasingly pisspor Warp roster as someone "to check out"
over any other thing, at all, just means you have a
frighteningly scant exposure to culture.

There's plenty more IDM ground to be trodden over again
IMO.
Analord is perhaps the best example of this. What makes
things bleak at the moment is the amount of piss poor
attempts which leads us to think IDM is flogging a dead
horse.

its strange because I agree with most of what was said. I
think drum and bass is becoming so oversaturated with
nonsense and boring rehashing that its extremely hard to
appreciate it. Im also finding it hard to appreciate some
of the older stuff that I loved a couple of years ago. That
being said, when it does click with me, its still one of my
favorite styles. Hope that makes sense because I dont think
I understand anymore

I actually probably agree with this. Most of the music
comming from these new Warp artists is fairly dire,
including most of Jimmy Edgar's released material. His live
shows have been very enjoyable, though, as have Jamie
Lidell's. They were two highlighs from Glade for me.
If "IDM" and Warp artists in particular were the only things
to dribble into my ears, you'd be right to accuse me of
having a lack of culture, but they're certainly not. It's
just one genre of out of many that I think is enjoyable and
still something to offer.
