is premiere pro another pile of shit or can you actually
make animations in it.

I've never actually gotten to use it. I usually just end up
shutting it off because I think the whole thing has frozen.
It most likely has something to do with my slug-like
computer. I was mostly interested in using Red Giant's
Magic Bullet plug-in. It's supposed to be somewhat
impressive at making digital video look like film.

Premiere Pro is for video editing.

I still have flash mx and imageready written down to check
out which you said you used on your avater.

oh, maybe after effects isn't intended for making animations
from scratch either.

I need to make a new avatar. I'd give Pendulum-Head a
Santa-hat or maybe a pumpkin... something or other, but I've
lost the Flash file. Lost, lost, lost...

Yeah, After Effects is mostly for adding animations and text
and rotoscoping or whatever to video.

how do you make that many frames that small of a file size
actually? Do you program at all? I am such a slacker but
want to use python to do a lot of stuff- one simple thing is
an animation where there are different 'layers' that are out
of phase (ex. a cape blowing in a 18 frame loop on a
superhero running w legs going in a 14 frame loop and arms
shooting guns in a 10 frame loop etc). I wonder if something
as complex/interesting as autechre can be made in python.
man I'm a bored lazy hopeless idiot.

None of it's programmed. It's just a very simple gif. Image
Ready (and probably other programs) lets you compress gifs
at the sacrifice of colour. If my avatar had more than 2
colours in it, I probably wouldn't be able to make it small
enough to be valid.

I want to start programming again. I've poked Python a
little, but not enough to form any decent opinion about it.

yeah of course after effects is made for adding effects
after all the production is done. Its like the photoshop of
video. Look into flash perhaps for animations. though they
are quite cartoonish, but using tweens is a quick and easy
way to produce some cool animations.

You can't just control individual pixels without it being
cartoonish? Is flash good for coordinating sound with
animation too (I'd probably just want to get a music tempo
and frames exactly coordinated so a drum here equals a
visual there etc). All well I'll try flash soonish (which
means in 3 years after I get motivated to get it, but
hopefully I'll be dead first).

AE is for animation. just because it's called "after
effects" doesn't mean it's just for adding effects...
afterwards.

i made this abstract short in AE

I wasnt saying you couldnt do animation in AE, in fact most
of the videos I make, are just AE, but its easier to do
certain things in other programs...AE can do just about
anything, including synchronizing to music.

I hate AE, you can't really time anything right because it's
not real time, and audio doesn't work at all...

maybe I don't have a grasp on how to use the program
effectively, but it seems pretty straight forward; when you
hit play it doesn't play at the right speed and it doesn't
play audio.

I had a class that covered adobe after effects and my
teacher didn't know how to solve these predicaments. I
managed to produce this though. And
this which isn't as good, but took much longer

I'm sitting with after effects cs4, I can't find the
'mode'-button (overlay, soft light, linear light, etc) on
the 'lense flare' effect.

reckon they're using cs3 or something in this tutorial
at 4:20 min, but where is it in the cs4?

anyone?
