100% sure it is a video file. i know mp4 is used for bot vid
and non. i've tried to use my qt-alternative which plays
dot-mov's, but doesn't work.

what does it say in qt, in the file properties window? and
have you tried vlc-player. that app plays just about
everything.

yes i was going to suggest vlc as well. it's played about
everything i've thrown at it even when nothing else would.

agreed VLC is quite good with strange file types, plays most
of my subbed anime movies

mp4 is a container format you still need the right codecs to
play what is inside.

Media Player Classic + latest FFDshow( http://x264.nl/ ) or
MPlayer(+MPUI for a gui) can play them.

Personally I use MPlayer because it plays just about
anything, contains great
videofilters(deblockers,noise,resizers), it's very fast and
navigating through a video works perfectly using a keyboard.
It has a huge manual though for the many options.

Quicktime is widely regarded as being a very bad mediaplayer
for more advanced audio/video.

VLC is nice man, it opens even a video file that is
incomplete!

you can recode with vlc as well, but i haven't figured out
