how could one apply this to music

eh?

what do you mean?

do you want people to perceive your music as a dead person?

Your music is unlovable, so I guess you're doing something
right.

Some roboticists have heavily criticized the theory ....
David Hanson, a roboticist who developed a realistic robotic
copy of his girlfriend's head, said the idea of the Uncanny
Valley was "really pseudoscientific, but people treat it
like it is science."

Oh god, yeah, I could really get behind someone like David
Hanson, thank goodness for his voice of reason. The
fucking... freak.

well the theory applies to robots and any non-living entity.
can music be considered a non-living entity? i think it
can, cause i mean, cause a person can have an emotional
response to it.. and have memory of its characteristics,
etc..

so i think its one of those person-to-person things, the
more you're into a certain type of music i think you reach
the uncanny valley when you hear that one bad ass song and
your eyes almost roll in the back of your head.. and after
that its adapted to you? i dont know

I don't think you understand the concept of the Uncanny
Valley at all and all you've done is go "Oh, this looks
badass... robots.. and shit... how could I make out my beats
have got anything to do with... whatever this is.. robots,
or something"

eh

it's rather about antropomorphy; you perceive human
characteristics in cartoon characters and animals, etc, but
when something becomes closer to looking like a human, your
attitudes towards it are no longer that of an attitude
towards something non-human which you put humanity into, but
rather something human that has something unhuman about it.
It looks like a human, but it isn't; lots of the things
normal living breathing human beings do are missing, and you
get the sense you're dealing with a corpse. You know how you
find those small victorian dolls creepy? The ones that look
like dead babies? That's about it.

if you were to apply it to music.. well.. it could be you
could do it with a nonhuman voice that was close to a human
voice, but I doubt it. I don't think you can apply this
effectively to music, nor do I know why you'd want to.

i think it's because you are so boring and uninteresting -
that you're against anything that seems remotely
interesting. go hit yourself in the temple with a brick

perhaps continuing to embrace your status as an asshole in
'real life' will allow you to appear "hard" and "edgy" and
"hard to impress" -- as you're going through the pile of
dirty clothes on your floor desparately looking for anything
that isn't encrusted with either microwave burrito glop or
your rancid dried semen

wow yeah that's a lot to think about..

when i got my grado sr-80's and got a good amp for them i
was sort of shocked by how 'present' alot of noises sounded.
i guess that could also be part of the uncanny valley in
terms of music -- how well a sound is reproduced. or kinda
like in 5.1 sound systems where the director will have a
conversation going on between like 3 people and it'll span
across 3 speakers, thats kind of uncanny too, its very
realistic but it's totally not..

the themes in mamoru oshii's ghost in the shell movies are
related to uncanny valley. all of the major characters in
that show are programmed.. they run on chips and wires but
their charm and personality is supreme, and they go past the
u.v...

never even heard of the idea. maybe you could apply it to
instruments - as they sound more human-like they become more
attractive, or some shit like that.

i want to apply Brownian Motion to music. e.g. totally
random sounds.

offline qrter from the future, and it works (Netherlands, The) on 2006-11-21 12:32 [#02005610]

but it isn't about realism in general, it's specifically
about realism in copying human behaviour.

offline fleetmouse from Horny for Truth on 2006-11-21 12:35 [#02005616]

For me the uncanny valley in music is like classical music
rendered by general midi patches, or someone making ersatz
guitar bass drums pop tunes with midi patches. Karaoke music
backgrounds, basically.

Not that they're as disturbing as a certain threshold of
semi-realism in androids - it's different, not as
emotionally creepy but every bit as grating.

It's aesthetically better to have something played by humans
on real instruments, or with obvious samples and synths.
Unless you're going for a certain camp factor.

this is all completely subjective hur hur hur

That would be white noise you're after. They make ocean
noise generators that do that. They put you to sleep.

Interesting theory i guess, but i can in no way imagine how
it could be used in music in any way.

Make some music that makes people happy, and they can dance
to.

I'm the Renoir of electronic music. The world is sad
and shitty enough already, so i just want to make some happy
stuff that people can imerge in.

i wanted to try making a song that consists of a beat
overlayed by totally random notes.
like dividing an octave into 10 and using the value of pi to

i'm reminded of an interview i heard with jhonn balance --
where he talks about their use of magick onstage.. saying
that it enhanced the connection between the music and the
audience, and jhonn said something like, "if we could
directly connect to each member of the audience we could,
but we don't have the technology yet",

i think it was this interview or this
one..

you can probably restrict modulation to be within pi hz of a
note of pi hz (you'd probably have to multiply pi a few
times for it to be audible) or whatever

That's not too hard, unless your song is infinite and
requires pi calculated to an infinite number of digits. :-)

yeah, how could you apply the theory of the uncanny valley
to music.. at what point does your emotional response to
music become so strong that it's uncanny - when its just a
ridiculously powerful phenomenon ? knee-shaking shit.. its
how i felt when i saw dj krush in 2003. i wasn't high
either, it was just, like, uncanny. like my mind was being
read and played back to me in music over the speakers...

it's kind of the same thing if you have an anatomically,
totally-human robot, right? like, my grandmother for example
-- what if it was designed to look exactly like my deceased
grandmother? i would have some VERY strong emotional
respoonses to seeing it walk and talk, and act, just like
she did - because in my head i have the memories of her, and
suddenly,, with the totally-realistic robot, the memories
are fed back to me visually. it's like, "wow, that's
precisely as i thought of her, and now she's right here".
same as in the previous scenario, am i wrong/right?

you can't apply it to music as it requires a human-like
body; it is very restricted to "human" presence. the
uncanniness comes from dealing with a "living dead," not
from any powerful experience.
