hi. just got a pair of new 1210's, set them up with a
couple of cheapie ortofon carts and a numark dm1050 mixer.
when i hit stop on one of the decks, it takes significantly
longer for the platter to stop spinning on one of them than
the other, also the record reverses a little bit from the
momentum of it stopping, whereas the other stops clean. why
is this? i think i set them up identically.

also, i have FSOL's papua new guinea on 12" and the bass
sounds really distorted on the orginal mix both on my shitty
sony mini system and through my shitty cheap sony MDR-V300
headphones. actually sounds a lot better on mp3! is this cos
my system can't handle it, or have i set the decks up
wrong?

i set the tone-arm height to 2, balanced it to the midpoint,
zeroed the counterweight, then increase the weight and
anti-skate to 0.5? this right?

yours sincerely,
mr. deck newbie

have you tried adjusting the brake speed? you can adjust the
thing in the picture to change it. have a mess around (only
turn it slightly) and you'll be able to match it with the
other one.

no idea about the record distorting, are you listening to
the headphones through the amp or your mixer? if it's amp it
might be that you have the mixer plugged into the phono
input on your amp, which is designed for direct turntable
input and will distort if you connect the mixer as that
amplifies the signal already. try connecting the mixer to
the cd input if this is the case.

i use weight 3 and antiskate 0, but i do quite a bit of
scratching so you might not need the weight

hmm, how to do i move the thing in the picture? i've just
taken the platter off and those arrows seem to be printed on
the fixed discy things full of holes that looks like it
doesnt want to move!

also, i have my headphones plugged into the mixer, which in
turn is attached to an all-in-one soni mini-system without a
separate amp. all the vinyls i play seem to have a certain
"fuzziness" (especially noticable on the headphones) but
really shows up when there's lots of bass.

yum!!!!

really do need to get myself two of those fine slipmats,
maybe that'll make the decks slightly happier.

you have to throw the midi system in the bin-thats your
problem.
you can get a cheap amp and speakers for about £150 that
will do the job fine.

another question!

whats the deal with white vinyl!

i just bought monolake - alaska remixes by surgeon etc,
limited white vinyl, and i drop the needle on it and the
needle just bobs all over the place, its like the grooves
are almost invisible on the thing - its really smooth. are
they not meantt be played?! i wouldn't have bought it if i
can't play it!

confused!
i wanna hear this one

turn it over

serious - it's probably a vinyl with just one side recorded
and the other site blank.

but that's not bad at all - use that "blank" site for
tweaking your anti-skating option.

put the neddle on the middle of the blan site and press play
and turn the knob of anti skating - you should tweak it so
that the needle won't "bob" all over the place as you said
but stay at one point.

nope.. its got really shallow grooves on both sides.

could it be a faulty mixer thats causing severe distortion?
i mean its not just my speakers thats doing it, its on my
headphones plugged into my mixer too

distortion may be caused by:

- too much pressure by the needle
- inappropraite system for the deck (too high signal)
- too high gain on the mixer (i guess you know that one)

try to change the channels in the mixer - if it remins the
same look at above.

a mixer doesn't distort so easily

distortion is be caused by the midi system, also what have
you earthed the decks to?

my decks are earthed to the mixer.

yea must be, def not too much pressure on the needle and i
got my gains at midpoint, ah well fuck it, its only an amp
and some speakers before im in audio heaven.

headphones ?

yes!!! i worked it out!!

0.5 wasn't enough weight, hence causing the distortion!! so
i bumped it up to 2 and the bass sounds lovely and clear!
woopdefucking woop i'm in heaven!!
