Bottle up your feelings

Why does everybody always insist on people "sharing" their
feelings with others?
There seems to be a lot more dignity in keeping certain
things to yourself. Everytime I've ever really told someone
how I felt or something important from my past or whatever,
I didn't feel better, I just felt embarrased or even
ashamed.
There's something very noble about not burdening others with
your problems.

You a Stoic are you? Marcus Aurelius "Get rid of the
judgement ... get rid of the 'I am hurt,' you are rid of the
hurt itself." ... "Nothing happens to any man which he is
not formed by nature to bear."

I think the origins of the philosophy date back to Zeno in
the 90s. The 290s.

I had heard the term "stoic", but I wasn't a aware it was an
old-school greek posse.

yeah, sure, exposing yourself puts you in a state where
you're open to blows, but that just makes not receiving the
blow (or rather receiving the thing you were hoping for)
have a larger impact than it would otherwise. sometimes you
have to risk to gain or whatever.

According to some medical research or other men only share
their problems as a last resort, when they really
desperately need help. Women are more inclined to share
their problems straight away, before exhausting their own
ability to deal with it. They reckon the higher male rate of
suicide may be at least partly due to this.

I agree there is something noble (and distinctly old school)
about not banging on about every little problem you have.
It's called Stoicism and it's something I admire.

As with anything, it depends on the situation. There are
times for keeping feelings in and times for letting them
out. And as was already said, for certain things you aren't
going to get very far if you keep all your feelings inside
and stuff, like relationships, etc. Sometimes you need to
take risks to get anything worthwhile.
