Brilliant lo lo lo-fi pop music.

It's like Daniel Johnston + Casiotone for the painfully
alone + Bogdan Raczynski + The Cure + Prince

Other fans?

i don't think it sounds much like daniel johnston at all to
be honest.

Hmmm... it made me think of him, because of the approach to
the music. Like, pop music creators, that arent produced in
any way, but end op being charming as hell.

The couple of tracks I've heard I really liked, I must seek
out the album proper.

Wow, I really liked this tune. I've heard hype about him and
just expected something that sounded like a 90s lo-fi indie
band. But this is genuinely fresh. I've listened to this
tune about five times now.

Yeah, i felt the same way before. I heard about it, and
thought it sounded like bollox, but it turned out to be
really good!

I just ticked "90s lo-fi indie" off of my massive chart of
"All things 90s that Swears will mention", it's like some
maaaad form of Bingo.

That's what it's been described as. Compared to Sebadoh and
stuff like that.

I never liked Sebadoh. Pfff. I just searched on Regular
Fries, and you'd mentioned them as well. Another tick on the
chart.

Well, Regular Fries were shit. Sebadoh had a couple of nice
tunes.

Listening to a few more of his tunes on YouTube, awesome.
The vocals sound like they've been sampled from some old
warped records or spooled tapes of MOR classics, and then
fed through various spooky effects. It's been a long time
since I've been this excited about a new artist. Gonna try
and get a couple of CDs tomorrow.

I feel you completely!!! It's so great to find something
fresh!

It's uncanny and a bit ghey, how we apparently share the
same taste.

Searching for Ariel Pink stuff, i stumbled over this, that
you might be interested in as well. I think the same guy
uploaded it or something. It's really good as well.

Yeah, I think what makes him so good is his reference
points.
Most acts doing this lo-fi kinda stuff would maybe be into
the Velvet Underground, other shambling indie schmindie
acts, maybe a touch of Blues or Folk. He seems to be taking
inspiration from MOR stuff like Fleetwood Mac, Kate Bush,
REO Speedwagon. If you recorded these songs "properly" they
could be massive hits, but that's not the point.
His tracks are like ghosts of pop songs, you can never quite
focus on what's going on in the tune.

Yeah, have you ever heard any Gary Wilson? He's sort on the
same tip.

I completely agree BTW. His music just has this nerve, and i
actually think it might dissapear if it was overproduced.

Strong Elvis Costello influence on the lower-pitched vocals
too, I've noticed and maybe a little Bowie.

Fuck me, Gary Wilson is really fucking good as well. His
voice is completely brilliant.

This really makes me wan't to make some new tracks, this.

From wikipedia on Gary Wilson

In the early 2000's, Motel Records began a search to
find the reclusive musician, but were unsuccessful (even
after hiring a private detective). He was eventually found
through contacting ex-band members. He was nearly 50 years
old, working at an adult video store, playing keyboard in a
weekly lounge act at the Rancho Bernadino Lounge and living
with his girlfriend (a grad student at UCSD studying
experimental art)

I LOL'ed

I have a mate who's really into him. He plays his tunes in
the the car all the time. I think some of those hip hop rare
record collector sort of people like Peanut Butter Wolf are
big fans.

ive been championing Ariel Pink for a while now. He has
released some absolutely quality stuff. 'Worn Copy' is a
great album and his Latitudes session 'Pedestrian Pop Hits'
is ace too. Still waiting for a lot of his rereleases in the
UK although I suspect its him thats putting them out in such
a random order and that therell always be massive holes in
his catalogue over here.

Personally, I think it's got a My Bloody Valentine, out of
focus sound to it. Quite enjoyable really!

Ha! what do you know, the name didn't ring a bell but I
recognized that song right away.. my cousin used to play
that alot back in our dorm room at college. I always liked
it..

It's a very interesting mix of influences. It reminds me
alot of the Doors right around the 1:10 mark..

Great band name too. Thanks for the heads up, J.
