Sound geeks, help me

What sort of software could i use to obtain that old skool
midi sound??

your sound card has a built in midi synthesiser

create a midi file

play back and record the sound.

You can write a MIDI file in Cakewalk I guess.

The sounds you hear are either generated by the chip on your
soundcard or by the software synth that comes with windows.
All you have to do is write a track in midi and set the
tracks to the right channels as well as select a general
midi patchnumber to each channel.

you access them by creating a song with midi and selecting
microsoft gs wavetable synth (or something like that) or the
synth called the same as your soundcard as playback device
instead of midi out 1 or whatever... most programs can do
this.
