I know Sting is now a total prick but doesn't anyone rate
the Police? They are on the radio at the moment. I used to
love them and realise I still do. Very rare with the music
of my youth.

Stingis great. Police are great.... Fields of Gold is a
fantastic song.

The Police created their best work when the band was under
pressure of splitting up. Cant stand losing you is my
favourate by far.

Did you know Marx thought that homosexuality was a bourgois
deviation?

Just proves he was wrong on more than just one point. (lol)
Homosexuality can be found among various animal species
(hell, some of my cats do it here and there), and I doubt
that even Marx could find any class distinctions there.
(well, maybe among certain species...)

I've been reading up a little on Baudrillard (you'll never
escape this). So he thinks that everything is a mere
representation of things that aren't real. Representations
based on images that are not true or can't be known?

Jedy: an idiot? So, now you're bashing mentally challenged
people? You'll have a lot to answer for my friend (lol, of
course).

Jonesy: What have you been reading? I mean that idea
stretches back to greeks. Nietzsche is famous for saying
"There are no facts, just opinions". That's just one side to
Baudrillard, though... Check out that site jand's tipped us
on (www.textz.com), plenty of free stuff, and a lot of
Baudrillard amongst it.

Jedy hates gays and people with learning difficulties - its
official. Ha, ha.

I've been reading bits of Against Postmodernism by Alex
Callinicos. Oh, and (don't laugh) Postmodernism for
Beginners.

I'm not laughing, those for beginners books are a fair
starting point providing you don't start namedropping and
boasting around the second you drop the book (i know I do,
heh). His latest book (Baudrillard's): Perfect crime is the
easiest to read, sou you might want to start there... Mind
you, my girlfriend dropped it after about 3 pages, but she
doesn't have the firm marxist foundations that you have.

I'm stumped man. My take is that there are no ideologies
that can explain any kind of truth. There is no truth.
Liberal deomcracy is the only model for social organisation.
Ask Meho man coz I ain't got a bleeding clue.

Ugh, Marlowe, you might like to have Lyotards definition:
postmodernism is incredulity towards meta-naratives. Mean
anything to you?

Points: 24578 Status: Lurker | Followup to Meho Krljic: #00121083

well i understood it, but it is basically meaningless - it
seems to be saying, more or less, think laterally...

offline jonesy from Lisboa (Portugal) on 2002-03-11 15:32 [#00121088]
Points: 6650 Status: Lurker

Meta-narratives a la Marxism, feminism etc.

So how much do you agree with Baudrillard? The Gulf War etc?

i agree with crowley:

SIT STILL
STOP THINKING
SHUT UP
GET OUT!

offline Meho Krljic from Beograd (Yugoslavia) on 2002-03-11 15:40 [#00121098]
Points: 6617 Status: Addict

Just a second here: meta-naratives as in: Truth, Justice,
Humanity etc...

It's not how much I agree, it's how much he has me
rethinking the things I thought were beyond any further
analysis... Postmodernism (or shall we call it post
structuralism, as it sounds a little less fashionable) is
all about taking very different perspective on what you
already know (while modernism was all about inventing new).
Uh, the gulf war? That article was dead on.
Funny how we succeed in turning every thread into
socio-political debate. Phobia will have our asses.

i like to talk about "wider" issues...

...back to meta-narrative -- we now require a definition of
the word narrative...i took this contextual definition to
mean straight storytelling

offline marlowe from Antarctica on 2002-03-11 15:45 [#00121104]
Points: 24578 Status: Lurker

you know, i've been thinking - i've always hated the label
Postmodernism; always struck me as sounding so 1950s...and
now i am thinking of labels, which i also hate -- as you may
know, the word CONVENTION has its root in the word
CONVENIENCE...labels are used as a convention - but i am
disturbed because, when using labels, a lot of people think
withing the insular confines of whichever LABEL they are
talking under... the universe is one, there are no Label
Walls between things - they are all inter-related. this may
sound like a sudden burst of static, but it's just what
occurred to me...

No, no storytelling, but those big concepts that we base
almost the whole of our culture on.

No, it's just that it's, for instance always been considered
that there actually exists one objective truth, regardless
of if there's anyone knowing it (an implicit reference to
God I guess).
