Does not the threat of an atomic catastrophe which could wipe out the human race also serve to protect the very forces which perpetuate this danger? The efforts to prevent such a catastrophe overshadow the search for its potential causes in contemporary industrial society. These causes remain unidentified, unexposed, unattacked by the public. This society is irrational as a whole. Its productivity is destructive of the free development of human needs and faculties, its peace maintained by the constant threat of war, its growth dependent on the repression of the real possibilities for pacifying the struggle for existence--individual, national, and international

I don't think many people are that bothered by nuclear war any more. Although the risk is certainly there (albeit lessened since the end of the cold war, in spite of what Bush et al would have us believe), society seems to of got fed up of worrying about it. Yes, the possibility is always there, but it's like worrying about developing cancer: Yes, within reason, you should do everything in your power to prevent it, but most sane people don't toss and turn at night worrying about it.
I'd say it has become "one of those things" we've become fairly fatalistic about: Like a giant meteor hitting earth, the threat is always there, but you accept it. Even anti-nuke protests get comparatively few supporters (to say, "war in Iraq" ones), in spite of it being probably the most far reaching and most permanent things we could protest about.

I think there's always been the equivalent of "atmoic catastrophe", be it from Angry Gods to Earhtquakes, Plagues, invading savages. We're always on the brink of disaster, it's how we do it *bobs head rhythmically*
