Being the good little western consumer i am, i just bought
one of these. And i can barely hear the fucker! If
you're walking alongside traffic, the music is literally
inaudible, even at full volume. It's not the headphones
(bought some sennheisers), not the AVLS, it's just...
rubbish. Tis quite a newish model so i'm guessing this is in
response to the iPod lawsuits? Ta for the concern sony but
i'd like to at least have the option of sending myself deaf
by 50...

Anyway, i'd be grateful if anyone could recommend some kind
of amp for between yer player and yer phones (do they
exist?), otherwise this is headed straight for ebay. God
damn.

Hi belb.

You can turn the volume limit off through the service menu.
It can almost double the available volume.

in my experience volume levels always drop considerably
during mp3 encoding.

from what I've heard from friends of mine the amplification
built into iPods is pretty shit as well.

I tend to boost tracks before I encode for use on my mp3
player - not so great for overall quality of the track, but
then again, I'm listening to mp3s in an outdoor environment,
so you know, quality wasn't very high on the list anyway.

No, it's Sony. They massively limit the output volume on
all their HD players in the EU. If you turn the limiter off
then it is like having a new player all over again.

I used the service unlock on my HD5 and the difference was
huge. My mate has a A1000 6GB model and he didn't get the
same increase that I did, although some tracks where a lot
louder than before.

today.

Hey, Belb, I have one of the very same players. Turning off
the volume limiter does increase the volume. but I agree it
isn't enough. Fortunately, I was fucking around with other
options in the test menu and I managed to find an option
which made it louder still. Now, it is definitely loud
enough, as loud as my Ipod (which died after 2 years) was
anyway. I cant remember what the option was, and couldnt
find any mention of it on the net, but its there, and it
makes more of a difference then turning the limiter off.

Good luck

Ipods piss me right off. Ill never be buying one again, not
after the short life span, single computer functionality,
and the short battery life.
