Yo. I am working on a hiphop remix for a friend but I am
getting 'nasty ass' clipping on the master channel even when
the individual mixes are way below peak. Anyone able to shed
some light on why this happens because it's happened before
and nothing I seem to do will fix it.

Probly your compressors. Try phasing to make things louder
instead of compression.

I know many people will agree with me here, but never use
compression on your bass. Only use it on the beats if you
want it to have a compressed sound, or the voice if you want
to control the dynamics. Use inverted stereo on you
bassline, because it makes it much more pronounced without
taking up too much headroom.

And by that I mean, "I know many people will disagree
with me here"

Compressors need to be used carefully. They can do crazy
magical things that you don't realize, like amplifying
sounds you don't necessarily hear, causing your mix to sound
muddy or clippy.

Put a mastering limiter on the master channel, but don't set
it to normalize / compress. It will catch the peaks that are
clipping without affecting the rest of the sound.
This is pretty good for doing that with the
threshold control set at zero. As you turn it down it will
start to affect the sound.

I may be confused about what you're talking about, but just
because each individual channel is under clip, it doesn't
mean the main mix will also be under clip... I usually just
turn down the main mix volume when stuff like that happens
and then I turn my speakers up...

If you are using stereo bass, then it can fuck up the mix,
you need to compress it down to mono at the very low end,
where the sub bass kicks in. There's a vst called otiumfx
basslane that is pretty good, but I'm sure there's better
ones out there.

Thats a good way to make your mix sound boring. People use
compression way too much. It makes everything sound generic.

interesting tips here, ill try some later. i dont tend to
use compression much. a limiter then quantized eqs stereo
spearation etc. when i deem it necessary

Try to mix down at about -6db

here's a bit of suggested reading:

Mastering Audio: the art and the science by Bob Katz

if you shop around you might find it at a cheaper price.
