[photos] critical mass!

critical mass is a monthly event where a bunch of cyclists
get together and ride through the streets. the idea is to
promote cycling rights, alternative transportation, and
environmental issues, among other things..

tonight was the first time i've gone. there were about a
hundred people, most of them were on bikes, but there were a
few skateboards, too..

things were going pretty well, we had been riding for about
half an hour when we managed to take over a very busy 3 lane
street.. traffic was backed up for a mile! but eventually
the cops showed up..

they grabbed a couple people as we were riding by, and threw
them in the back of the car. everyone stopped riding and
there was a bit of a confrontation.. more cops starting
showing up.

the crowd got going with some call/response chants; "who's
streets? our streets!" and "are we holding up traffic? we
are traffic!", while the cops were yelling into their
loudspeakers..

the entire street was at a standstill, and nobody was
moving. after about 15 minutes of this, the cops figured out
they couldn't just arrest all of us.. so they let the guys
out of the back seat (with a $40 bylaw ticket for not riding
in the right hand lane..), and we went on riding.. all in
all, it was pretty fun ;)

most big cities now have a critical mass group, so if you're
interested, check out the website i linked above.

here's the pics..

also, if you like my pictures, do me a favor and check out
my new track..

i hate critical mass. it seems very counter productive for
cyclists rights. to raise awareness, they hold up traffic.
good work, now all the cars are aware the bikers are ass
holes. to promote the environment, they all ride bikes from
one arbitrary place to another. meanwhile, hundreds of cars
idle, wasting gas and poluting the environment. again, good
work.

i like bikes, i try to be careful when driving around them.
but critical mass seems like the wrong way to champion for
the cycling lifestyle.

they wouldn't be wasting gas if they were riding a bike
instead ;)

i've been hit twice now by drivers not paying attention (and
come close many other times), so it was nice to not have to
keep looking over my shoulder for once.

motorists must learn to share the road, and i can't think of
a more effective way to get the message across.

i know of better ways. for example, in seattle, there was
an installation throughout the city that was part memorial
and part artwork. a group of people placed bicycles painted
white on several street corners where a bicyclist had been
hit by a car. these things were all over the place. every
time you saw one, you were made aware of the danger cyclists
face while riding. it definitely raised awareness while not
pissing off a lot of motorists.

Also, Cyclists are not totally innocent. I consistantly see
cyclists running red lights, blasting through intersections,
hopping on and off sidewalks. I've been nearly hit by
cyclists while walking many times. Cyclists must also
learn to "share the road." If you are riding your bike in
the street, follow the rules.
