so.. I found an old reel-to-reel-ish thingie (see
attachment) at my grandparents' place and I fixed it up (had
to re-attach some belts and fix a connection thingie) and
brought it back with me to bergen. It's awesome! The tapes
are full of great old recordings and the sound you can get
when you run stuff through it is golden!

I ran the drums on this track through it, and the talking
sample is from an old old old radio show that I found a
recording of on one of the tapes. The guitar in the middle
is courtesy of r40f, conqueror of the persian sea and
scourge of orion!

wow the drums sound almost real-ish. very fun track you got
there. i dig the r40f guitar bit a lot.

thanks!

I believe the real feel comes from the tape processing even
though I have both the original drum pattern i did and the
tape processed ones on at the same time through most of the
song... I'm definately going to experiment more with this
thing.. I've tried sending different synths through it and
some come out sounding awesome while others just sound like
lofi versions of themselves which can be good, but not
necessarily what I'm going for.

A good tune, how exactly did the tape machine come into it?

thanks!

on this I just processed the drums through it (recorded
drums onto a tape and played it back) and those vocal
samples are from one of the tapes.

I've been meaning to create a tape loop on it, but it's hard
since the tape won't have any place to attach to the reel
thingies and the place where it reads the tapes has a lot
harder "grasp" than that of a normal tape recorder so I
don't think the friction would pull the tape...

haha it's great...recycle was right, it sounds very vintage.
Yet more quirky brilliance.

Very cool

I found a similar one in my grandma's basement, but I was
young and stupid and just dismantled it.

thanks!

they're really easy to figure out; I know nothing about
electronics, but I still got it from where the reels didn't
even turn to fully operational! if you didn't explode it,
you should be able to piece it back together...

this sounds awesome

hearing stuff like this makes me wanna ditch my idea of
using a hard disk recorder

thanks!

haha, I think you should stick with the hd recorder.. these
tape reels are a bit old.. if you recorded an entire song to
them, 10% would be lost in the process in the form of just
plain gaps in the sound.. it's like instant
"song-2-disintegration-loop."

if I could get new reels and new tape heads, however... but
that could quite possibly take away some of the charm/point.

short version: they're good for effects like tape distortion
and certain other lo-fi effects, but not something you'd
want all your songs on.

this is clearly a fake. drunken mastah would never just have
an uncut amen break looping for a whole song.. sorry, but
its a fake.
that said, whoever did make this song has some nice skills :
)
even tho im still trying to work the big connection between
the cool old vintage box thingo and the song, both are
worthy of 2 thumbs up and a possible smiley
face................. : )

unabomber: yeah, I love it! me and my brother used to play
with it a lot when we were kids, so every once in a while,
there are small weird bits we unwittingly recorded...

falito: hahaha, thanks!

pigster: haha, I programmed the drums myself, and there
are sublte variations (though not on the drumpattern
I recorded onto the player unless you count the part where I
did some delay fanciness). The connection with the box and
song is that the drums in the background (the ones that
start the song and that are playing when the guy is
talking.. they're in the background the whole time except
for a small part just after the guitar part) were recorded
onto it and then I recorded them back for the song. Thanks,
btw!
