Weirdest instrument/sample on record

What's the weirdest instrument or sample you can think of
on a record?

It could be old stuff like (at the time) a Theremin on Good
Vibrations or 13th Floor Elevators' Electric Jug. I think
Peter Gabriel used a trained chimp on one of his records
once.

Or odd samples like Future Sound Of London sampling the
sound of Gerard Depardieu's chin scraping an actress's
minge...you know, that kinda thing.

It's a slow day at work...

me and a mate made a song that consisted of stomping on the
floor and the sound of tropical nectar poured into a glass
plus a fork on a plate.

that's the spirit! I think Matmos sampled the sound of
plastic surgery, though I'm not sure how.

Matmos has recorded a lot of weird samples. and used them in
a lot of very cool tracks. : )

their latest album features the sounds of roses, teeth,
manure, semen, cow vagina, live garden snails, etc. and it
rocks.

naming a twatty sample source makes about as much difference
to the production as bumming your bandmate does to
reproduction.

That said, i remember from Dizzee Rascal - Stop dat, theres
a sample of a cat howling, that is used in the most
brilliant way, and its only used like, one time in the
entire song.

not weirdest but yes i like the sample at end of track
"Remote Control" of beastie boys album Hello nasty.

"Hubo una vez un gran Rey...!"-try it

That's at the beginning of the track on the Hello Nasty LP,
don't think its on the single, but yes you are correct it is
brilliant.
The track is called "El Rey y Yo" according to wikipedia- In
english "The King and I."

The lyrics mean: "Once upon a time, there was a great king
who had many lands, a castle, and a love too."

Also remote control is one of the only songs I know the
lyrics to. I know all of them, which counters my complete
lack of lyrical knowledge for 99.999% of all other music.

heh...I was gonna mention Matmos. They did an album out of
plastic surgery noises. Liposuction vacuums, stretching
skin, all that nice stuff. :p

I like the phrank call in the intro of Nailbomb's "While you
sleep, I'll destroy your world".

And weird instrument, dunno... Once a friend came to play
and all he has was a pair of stones...

Oh, also this record is quite weird...
TERJE ISUNGSET
ICEMAN IS

Quote:
"The sonic qualities of ice turned out to be so fantastic
that Terje decided to start working on a CD recording with
ice instruments. He wanted to expand beyond ice percussion,
and had ideas for ice "brass" and string instruments.
Recording conditions would have to be extreme, because the
fragile ice instruments are very quiet and also prone to
temperature damage."

pauline oliveros, stuart dempster, panaiotis - "deep
listening"

(for accordion, voice, conch shell, metal pieces, trombone,
didjeridu, garden hose, whistling, metal pipes)

album recorded in the bottom of a cistern that once held two
million gallons of water, the creators took full advantage
of their environment's 45-second reverb time

Its hard to say. A lot of producers will use strange sounds
and not brag about it. Especially when electronic
instruments were being invented, and a lot of avant garde
composers were going crazy with technology. Even now with
the current trend in circuit bending, the question is almost
irrelivant.

Matmos used a lot more than just plastic surgery. They also
used gay porn, animals shitting, cows giving birth, bones
being cut in an autopsy, a bunch of crazy stuff.

However, I think otto van shurik (or whatever) wins the
prize for his vomit album.

I once recorded myself cracking my knuckles and used that in
music. I also used to record things like coins being spun
and electric tape, and microphones being submerged and other
stuff.

Good vibrations wasn't a theremin. Its called a Tanerin. Its
a metal strip that controls the frequency, not an antenae.

Isn't the "Tanerin" also the Electro-Theremin?

theremin

Jesus, people get really petty about the Good Vibrations
Theremin story. Soooooooo, why should I break with
tradition?

It is a Theremin, it was adapted slightly by Paul Tanner.

U lucky norwegians!

I love all Jazzland stuff... but just seen Bugge live, and
it was with Laurent Garnier, so not my cup of tea.

Yes. But its a different instrument. Same as the water
theremin. Similar, but different.

I would go so far as to say that a photo theremin is
different from a theremin too. Its like comparing bass
guitars and violins.

Petty. Maybe. A tanerin is a lot easier to play than a
theremin. Give thereminists the credit that is due.

a pussy on his releases.

Well, not the live I've seen, but blame it on Garnier...

And as for records, dunno, I love both I have, one is live,
one studio...

Do you know his sideband Samsra? It shoked me hard. Ace
stuff!
