I`m really sick of programming music these days. Tracking
adds more EXACT placing of stuff, but multi tracks tend to
have better over all feels. FL Studio is too ... FL studio
sounding... and My drum machines are broken.

I was thinking about switching to cubase or logic. I got an
AMD 900 with 256 megs of ram, so I am sort of skeptic about
it running well on my machine.

RIght now I just DONT WANT TO FUCK AROUND WITH SOFTWARE.

The least amount of fighting with my computer the better.

Any advice? Ableton maybe? I need a really good sequencing
solution but with out all the CPU.

The perfect peice of software would be a multitracker that
had MOD TRACKING built in... cause there is nothing more
annoying then having to keep adding new patterns and shit.

Something like the FL studio playlist editor, but with a
trackers style of building your patterns.

You might wanna try Abelton, but it sounds like you aren't
inspired ATM. Peeps don't wanna recognize sometimes but
flstudio can do a lot a lot a lot. Stop using the crap that
comes with it. Get some samples, make your own. Just get a
mic or take those old Flsamples and twist the snares into
pads or bass drums into high hats. You get the idea

Thanks for all the advice!

No no no, don't get me wrong Flstudio is very good, everyone
I know who uses it makes amazing music with it.

I meant the over all SOUND of the sequencer tends to have
it's trademarks. I don't know why but there is something
about a song mixed only in fruityloops that sounds like it
was made in FL. The few people that have surprised me with
thier mixing in FL would be Blaerg and Impakt.

I think I might actually go with the Kawai Q-80. I use to
own an alesis mmt-8 and loved it. But there was no disk
drive! And yes I think I am a little uninspired, electronic
music doesn't really move me like it use to. It's all kind
of crap now.

Well if you have a drum machine, do the drum programming on
the machine and then export your beats as wavs into fl. Then
you don't have to deal with fl.

Also try sync128 instead of 6-point hermite.

I dunno how else FL could make a track 'sound' a certain way
unless you compare noob trax to noob tracks.

for software maybe try bidule by plogue, or audiomulch
or more on the fruity style there is orion
renoise has already been said but it needs a second mention

for hardware, try a full on analog style midi/cv sequencer
if you have the money (doepfer,etc...)

i'd recommend ableton Live as well. it is very easy to use
out-of-the-box but it also has potential for tinkering and
persnickity sample editing/cutting/pasting if you wanna go
that route. if you ever used Acid Pro, the format is very
similar, though ableton is waaaay better.
you can reWire it really easy and running VST's on it is a
cinch. Even big VST's like Reaktor or Battery or Absynth
run along side, no problem. so you can get a lot of mileage
out of ableton.

I've used Jeskola Buzz for so long I can't even remember how
to use anything else. I like software though, trackers
especially. I like the capability for such absolutely
meticulous detail and complexity.

lol, no seriously, with Live it's really easy to keep
working and get good results. Everything else usually bores
me (Cubase) or I get stuck in but the results aren't so good
(FL).

You should check out EnergyXT, brilliant modular sequencer
that's dirt cheap. I love it!

I would suggest not using a computer if your lacking
inspiration. Try sequencing on something that doesn't get
you to plug your notes in on a grid.

If you think a certain software is sticking you in a certain
sound because of how it operates, diversfy. Choose your
"master" platform, be it Live, Cubase, or whatever, then
start creating patterns on different gear/software and
importing it in. You could probably get fresh results doing
a pattern on an old school 16 step sequencer, then maybe
take a rip of that sequence and load it into a granular
synth or something and mess with the start point, length,
etc of the sample. Try mixing and matching and matching
between what you have and what is available online to get
more interesting results.

Because, you know, if it didn't take ages to make, it can't
possibly be good.

it doesn't have to be simple. you can run Reaktor through
it as a VST if you want to dry your contact lenses out
mapping wacky effects. you can meticulously snip and
arrange slivers of samples if you like. you can draw funky
ramps and picket fences with your envelopes if that tickles
your fancy. you can chain supatrigga to a delay on a send
channel and to a reverb on another channel, route them to a
lesley and stutter some ambience into your arse if that's
what gets you hard. or you can just load up a heap of loops
and hotkey them all and play your QWERTY board like you were
some kinda techy beathoven dork if that's what gives you a
stiffy.

you can do lots of shit with Live. but the beauty is that
you don't have to know how to do all that stuff to get your
cherry popped.
