Instrument: Absynth is damned good. As well as being superb at complex evolving pads (which it does better than almost anything else I've come across), it's also (and this isn't discussed/mentioned much) very good for more simple synth sounds, like dirty DnB basslines, too.
FX: I probably use PSP Vintagewarmer most; only software compressor I've ever been really impressed by.
Just wait, shortly the Max/MSP and Reaktor nerds will turn up and tell you that using ready made synths is as uncreative as sampling and how they make truly unique sounding stuff using their custom drum machine/synth/fx unit, despite it sounding like a half-arsed Autechre clone to everyone else.
Also, wait for the hardware boys to come round, saying how software x can never sound as good as hardware y, in spite of:
a) They've never used software x and b) The bit of hardware they're refering to isn't analogue anyway.
Disclaimer: Yes, I use hardware, Reaktor, MAX and VSTs; I just don't agree with the zealots that say VSTs are inherently inferior. ;-)

So many to choose!
3X osc in fruityloops is actually surprisingly versatile and cool. I love it!

yea i liked how flexible you could make the sound with bends and stuff, you can't do that with audiorealism's bassline for instance

I really dislike VSTs these days. The classics pack is really the only thing I use. Their chorus plugin is (as dumb as this may sound) on of the best chorus`s ever. Not to cheesy, not to plain. They can really spice up a mix!

When I used Cubase I had a group of plug-ins called GRM tools. Just a bunch of effects that was cool. Not even sure if these will still work with the current cubase as mine was 3.7.
I've lost touch with VST stuff since I went down the Protools path.
