it fully depends on the quality of each element. in
radiohead songs i appreciate the lyrics and the melody most
of the time. it's never the same for all songs mind you. for
drum n bass it's usually the beat that i'm appreciating.

Good question. Hard for me to answer really. I say first,
"Are the drums dancable?" Second, "Is it going to make me
want to do something (good/bad)?"

Depends on the mood, if im out riding the buss/train or just
chilling out at home the melody is the most important thing,
second comes the drums. When im in a upbeat party mood/on
the move I like to have a good combiantion of beats and bass

Just for clarification, since someone didn't like this
question..

I'm not trying to imply that anyone listens to all or none
of these things, or even just one of them, it's a grand
oversimplification for two reasons;

1. conversation, im bored and
2. Many people focus on different things, some people like
the lifestyle of a certain genre; say punk or metal, others
like composition and melody more; aka classical.

Some people focus more on the sounds themselves; say avant
garde people and noise people.

My point is, I realize very few if any focus EXCLUSIVELY on
any of these things, it's just a way to categorize so we can
start to analyze a little bit, maybe ask ourselves "what do
i appreciate usually in a song?"

So there.

How ironic it is. The less straightfoward and sincere the
better.

The melody is most important. Atmosphere is important in
ambient music, and a good beat is also nice, but for me it's
like
1. melody
2. melody
3. melody
4. atmosphere
5. beats

3. Style ** (atm style is very important for me somehow)
4. Lifestyle it represents (what kinda i-hate-emo-kids
option is that)
5. Atmosphere and mood it gives you (the mood is in the song
and i can appreciate that, in so far it's related to me it's
mostly the other way around, as in 'im in the mood for..')
6. Lyrics (if they're good i care, but i usally don't listen
to songs anymore..)

Case by case basis to the extreme, though I guess most of my
absolute favorite music tends to have a transcendental
melody. But most of the music I listen to isn't really
melodicentric. I dunno. Boobs.
