entire life goal has been wasting time I suppose dsl

didn't dialup load times give you precious moments upon
which to contemplate brown spiders?

in a few days? I'm pretty excited and a little scared since
I have no ideas (except for my behemoth idea from long ago
which will take one month).

Just play around with geometric shapes (tetris/ etc) until a
game arises out of it. Then continually tweak/evolve it to
make it more wicked by adding peripheral rules/goals, more
extreme bold fun things etc. A game with rules like tetris
could probably be more fun/have more potential if the grid
its based on is smaller, thus making it more complex. I love
complexity in pretty much anything and am fascinated by it
(universe/autechre tracks/etc). Complexity as opposed to
randomness. Things that are built up into fantastic
constructions that are hard to comprehend. Things that screw
with the brain are fun, like symmetry. Make all the visuals
hypnotic. Wird.

hmm, maybe. I guess a drug trip would be a short cut. Do
you have any interest in a game having some physics model?
things with tension etc.

I've been contemplating the enemy AI and had some good
ideas, and am wondering if they are sufficient for most of
the good game play.

As in, I was thinking of a bot in a shooter game which
learns the human player's general strategy, and maybe having
it develop new enemies based on that.. dunno.

the game will probably be a shooter, since I love those
most.

Can you think of the core reason(s) you like shooters? the
bosses? the gameplay of dodging bullets in odd patterns like
multiple radial sprays?
They do tend to be challenging, but I'm not too fond of the
design of having to replay early levels a zillion times.
It's a cheap way to program difficulty because your access
to later levels, in order to become as skilled at them is
limited. I think a 2d shooter where you can go around in all
directions (like that ancient asteroids game) might have
more potential and would automatically be a little non
linear at least just because going in all directions forces
it to.

I was thinking of something in a rectangular space like you
say. I like shooters I guess for the challenge and pattern
processing.

If I make it in a day my 'artwork' will be limited to simple
shapes; polygons and curves, which is cool.

I wish I was a nerd but truly I am a geek. Geeks have all
the social impairments and bad hygene, and interest in
idiotic things, but lack the smarts. In a school full of
only geeks and nerds, the geeks get shoved in the lockers.

Well you ultimately accomplished your goal in a single
thread; to make me agree that dsl sucks more than dial up.

Felch king, you should go make a topic now. I think it could
have potential.

When I fart I like to think that.. it was recorded in
history. That *I* made a ,difference

hey I just had an idea. not much of one though. what if
every level in this rectangular space had a fixed amount of
enemy matter; whenever you hit any of it, you die. when they
fire at you, they actually fire pieces of themselves. so
basically they just keep reshaping themselves to attack you.
can divide as many times as they like. as the level
increases, a higher proportion of the map is filled with
enemy.

could be awesome.

offline w M w from London (United Kingdom) on 2006-08-11 23:45 [#01952580]
Points: 21454 Status: Regular

Then why not take out the 'shooter' of it and make it
entirely 'pattern processing'. The whole thing about
graphics of ships and stuff is just an unecessary skin over
the top of everything.. even a hindering skin because it
makes you think only in the paradigm of
ships/shooting/previous shooter games etc.
An example is the game road rash 2. I think the best weapons
fitting to gameplay, each unique, would be 1) something that
causes more damage than fists 2) something that attacks at a
greater frequency than fists.
However they only have #1 and instead made this idiotic
weapon you always try to avoid, the bat, just so it can fit
in with the paradigm of fighting on bikes.

That sounds good; also has a simplistic core which is good.
I think to build good complexity it might be best to do it
all within a simplistic core, which might be oxymoronic but
not really. Just a more detailed simplistic core. (only
adding additional complexities that add to the experience,
not subtract)

complexity could come from all the different ways I let the
enemy blob split up and recombine. The first version (err,
the end of the day) might just have it breaking off little
copies of itself, and be boring. damn it could work but to
do it well would be nasty.
