drivers license.

I'm currently down as, but if the government change the
system to "opt out" as they were proposing, I'll stop on
principle. I don't like the idea of the state owning your
body by default...

thats an intresting point.. i hate the government, i'd hate
for them to own my body, i guess i'd always seperated
medical research and the state.

I'm not, but i should be. The thing that stopped me from
doing it is the principal that EVERYONE involved in an organ
donation, excluding the one who gets the organ, and the one
who gives away his organ makes money out of it. Its
currency, so it would be fair to get a fee for the people
you leave behind, since everyone else makes money out of
it.

Anyway, one of my good friends wouldnt be alive today if it
wasnt for organ donation. He had his heart replaced (and his
name is Nielhert... the irony)

This made me think i should be an organ donor.

Why, what would you want to do with your body when you'll be
dead?

Youre from Holland, and its probably the same as here in
Denmark, where you dont pay for your medical bills. But in
most parts of the world you pay for the medical bill.

jah, but also what im thinking is you won't help the people
in need by fighting the organ trade system by not donating
in our countries things are fair, thankgod

but i agree with you that in many countries it's really crap
where you can get a transplant sooner when you have money,
that's why we need to fight this system by donating even
more organs :)

As I said, I've currently chosen to be an organ donor.
That's fine. I'd like to help someone live after I die. What
I don't want, is the system our government was proposing a
couple of years back, whereby by default, when you are born,
you are put on the organ donating list. You would then have
to "opt out" (doubtlessly involving shedloads of beauracracy
in the process: numerous forms to fill in, phone calls to
check they've actually done it, etc.) if that were the case,
I would opt out on principle. I think it's a slightly creepy
state of affairs whereby the state own your body
automatically and you have to jump through hoops to get it
back.

To me, it smacks of the situation in China where executed
prisoners' bodies are owned by the state (not their
families) and the government sell their organs for financial
gain.

Would you want a system where you had to fill in a load of
paperwork and co-operate with beauracratic government
agencies to get out of donating blood ever 6 months?
Donating blood or organs is an act of charity. If you make
it mandatory, the "charity" of the act is lost. The whole
point of charity is that you choose to do something
selfless to help others.

i wish you could direct where you donated organs go. i
wouldn't want my organs going to some asshole who botched
their suicide by not taking enough pills and booze, and now
they need a liver because theirs is fucked. if it were some
poor sap with a bum kidney because of a farming accident,
i'd be cool with that.

mimi: you don't faint when you give blood, unless there is
something wrong with you? i gave blood 2 days ago, it was
fine, fun even. free cuppa, cheese and crackers

sure... if they are even good enough to donate when i'm done
with them, i dont think i've ever been all that concerned
with health, i haven't been exactly righteous with my body.

but yeah, take what you want...

some people just react very badly to having blood drawn. we
drew blood from a subject in clinic once, only about 30ml,
and he passed out. he actually stood up and walked down the
hall, then he fell down. i felt kinda bad later for
laughing at him.
