[Gear] SH 201 & Matrix 6r

So, I just went crazy and bought two new synthesizers. An
Oberheim Matrix 6r, and a Roland SH-201. The oberheim came
in the mail yesterday (impulse purchase on Ebay last week)
and when I walked into my neighboorhood gear store today, I
noticed that they had the sh in (I had been planning on
buying one as soon as they got them in, but didn't know that
it was in yet).

Boy am I happy. I will post pics and audio samples in the
next day or so.

(BTW, the SH 201 is awesome. Usually roland hypes their
synths up so much, that when you finally get to play one
their is massive ammounts of dissapointment, but this one
totally lives up to everything they have said. Great piece
of gear for $700!!)

That being said, I do wish that they used better materials
for the sliders. They feel like cheap plastic. Everything
else feels pretty sturdy tho ;)

Oh man, pictures please. I always love seeing your set up.
It inspires me when I make music.

Heh... serious?

I will post pics. But our digital camera is dying, so I
can't guarantee how soon they will be. I am pretty proud of
it now. I just moved my turntable beside the mpc, so things
have been happening really fast. I hope to have some songs
to show people very soon. ;)

SH 201?

I was thinking of getting a 202 'cause I heard the Human
League used one on "Dare".

Its the new roland synth. It seems like a throwback their
late 90's groovebox series.

The SH201 IMHO is way overpriced. I got my Alesis Ion for
£400 and that had:
3 Oscs
2 Filters
3 Full Envelopes
around 10 FX.

Swears: The Human League rocks!

The alesis Ion retails for $350 more than the sh201. The ion
is also multitimbral. All you can do with the sh201, is
perform multi's or splits. I don't feel its overpriced
though, and I have my share of both affordable and expensive
equipment. The ion is remarkably underpriced for what it
offers. However, the nord lead only has two oscilators as
well, and it kills the ion in a blind taste test at the gear
store. That being said, the evolver kills all of them, and
that only cost me $450. Next runner up, the oberheim matrix,
and that kills everything but the evolver (although, it has
a much darker sound than the evolver, and the envelopes seem
punchier) and that only cost me $300.

Anyways, if they still had the ions in stock around my neck
of the woods, I would have one of those too right now. And
unfortunately, I will have to pay at least $1050 if they
ever get them in again.

Another thing the sh201 has; it comes with a vst plugin that
you can edit the parameters of the synth, send midi info,
and audio to and from a computer, all through a usb cable. I
am considering re-integrating a computer back into my setup
for chord sequencing. I could find that usefull ;)

The theme music sounds like a 90's throwback.

Well, there are a lot of trance presets. If you want to make
a lot of money in that industry, you have to cater to all
the douchebags that have nothing better to do than to make
music for clubs and raves.

but some clubs and raves play good music!!?! :O:O

can it do dubstep wobbly basslines?

Yeah I was using it the other day, it`s pretty awesome! I
like it better then the New Juno and that new Fashion shick
thing korg is putting out.

Seems to be the smart investment if your getting into synths

It can, actually. That was one of the things I checked out
when I was playing it. It does those low end sounds pretty
well.

yeah but can it go

wowowowowo crack crak crack
wowowowowo crack crak crack
wowowowowo crack crak crack
wowowowowo crack crak crack??

Well, it does the wowowow. You just need to add some crack
to make it sound like dubstep. You can't have dubstep
without the crack.

I wouldn't worry too much; the original 101's sliders don't
feel particularly robust, but they usually last for years,
even if gigged.

I like the look/sound of the 201, but I'd want a play with
one (linked to a PC) before deciding.

Oxygenfad: What're the new Junos like?

Hmmm. I kind of mean they feel like they were pulled out of
a kinder suprise kind of cheap plastic. Its its worst point,
the knobs and sliders. The buttons however, feel remarkably
sturdy.

Yeah, to me and my dad the SH201 looked very tacky.

Bit of a shame. At £500 you want something to have
half-decent build quality.

You think it'd be even more of an issue these days; I'd say
an average bit of gear (now that software is so prevalent)
is more likely to be gigged than, say, 10 years ago.

I am going to be designing a template to go over it. Its a
pity that it sounds so good, but looks like something a 13
year old would design.

Yeah. Well, I guess they have to cut corners somewhere. Its
pretty much the only complaint I have about it. The look of
it and the build quality. I am pretty sure I can track down
some better knobs and slider caps. I would like to see about
getting skull knobs. I have always wanted something with
skull knobs.

Depends on the side of the knobs, but what I'd do is get
some citadel minatures plastic skulls, cut them in half, so
you have the front of the skull, but with a flat back and
glue them onto the top of the knobs (painting them before
glueing them on- make sure you don't paint any surfaces
where glue will go though). If the knobs are fairly large,
the shields from these skeletons should do:

Skeletons

Let me see what you end up doing, it sounds interesting.

You can actually buy skull knobs for guitars. I want to see
if they will be compatible with the knobs on this synth.
That would be awesome!

How do they work? Are they a slightly larger hollow knob
that slides over the existing knobs?

No, you take the original knob off, and put these ones one.

Ha ha, since posting this, my cutoff and res sliders (most
used ones, I suppose) on my 101 have developed a crackle.
Anyone know how to safely clean them? Is it the same as a
mixer crossfader (as detailed here) which I've
done before on other audio gear?

Ta in advance.

just open it up and have a look; if it looks like you'll
have to dismantle the whole thing or like you can't really
reach the sliders, screw the lid back on. no damage done. if
it looks like you can get them out, do so and clean them...
