For those who missed out on the Psychospell
Got another circuit bent Speak on ebay, this time a Speak &
Math. Check the demo. If anyone outside of the UK wants to
buy it for £90, I'm happy to send it as long as they're on
XLT.
Thanks,
Future Image

how much would you charge me to bend my rolf harris
stylophone.
this isnt a joke btw.

You can't I'm afraid. It's analog and with analog equipment
you can't do much. The closest thing to a bend I've found is
holding the stylus tip hard with one hand then touching the
keys hard with the other. It makes some weird drones and
stuff. The harder you hold, the higher the pitch.
You could add filters and stuff to a Stylophone, but you can
do those kinda sounds with a simple synth.

stop breaking innocent toys! just because you hate math
don't mean you gotta "get back" at the math toys! what's
next? circut bend a Speak and Girls?

actually, you could do a hell of a lot with a stylophone...
you just have to know a couple of things about electronics
and not just mess around with a soldering iron and randomly
adding wires and crap.
You could add a TL074 and make a nice sallen-key low pass
filter with resonance, or add a distortion/clipper stage or
whatnot.

I'd rather have a stylophone than a digital toy, all you
can do with digital is glitches, unless you really know what
you are doing and get down to bit bashing.

But surely you can do exactly the same with a freeware
softsynth?

no a freeware softsynth requires a computer and mouse and
all that crap. my idea needs 1chip, a few resistors and
capacitors and two knobs.
Also a label marked cutoff and resonance if you're really
fancy!

I thought the whole idea was to get away from computers. I
can get a glitch VST, timestrech, looping, etc on a
computer, so why should I spend £90 on your ebay thing?

The Glitch VST won't make all the sounds itself, will it? It
just effects the input. What I'm selling makes sounds that
are hard to create elsewhere.

Do you have schematic of that? I might use that in my
Black Box Synth

A glitch vst might not make all the sounds itself. But try
messing with maxmsp, it will. Personally, I love the idea of
curcuit bending anything (not that I've done much myself),
particularly analogue synths, since you can do plenty with
some passive elements, and maybe a few opamps or something.
Its all experimentation.

Mind I don't really call the analog stuff bending, more
modifying.

Ok, quite lazy, but you should be able to fill in the gaps:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sallen_Key_filter
gives idea about sallen-key filters. make the caps and
resistors the same value to make the equation for cutoff
frequency
Fc=1/(2*pi*R*C).

now make the two resistors variable resistors, by using a
dual-gang potentiometer.(this is cutoff freq control)

For resonance take the output of the filter, through a
non-inverting opamp amplifier back to the input, and set the
gain to above unity. Put a potentiometer (variable resistor)
between the output of this amp and the input of the filter
stage, so that one end of the resistor conencts to 0V and
the other to the amp output. The wiper selects the amount of
feedback from 0V to the amp output voltage. (this is
resonance control)

For distortion, a nice trick is to do an inverting opamp
amplifier and use an two LEDs connected in inverse parallel
as part of the feedback network to clip the signal
nicely....

so you have the input resistor, then from the output
terminal to the inverting input you have the feedback
resistor. Now connect a LED in PARALLEL to the feedback
resistor, then connect a second LED in PARALLEL again, but
the opposite way round and there you go.

Links to wikipedia to help out.

Hope that kinda makes sense. If you want more help tell me
your email and I can send you a mail with diagrams, etc if
that is easier. I hope you have fun with electronics, but I
hope you do less random wiring and more thought-out stuff,
the benefits are huge. Instead of being able to offer 120
different types of glitch, you can add marvels like a mic
input to set the filter frequency to level of your voice
(hello fenixfunk10) or other such fun things.

maybe a visit to http://www.paia.com/ would be of interest.
above all, I hope you e

stupid character count....
just wanted to say I hope you enjoy yourself.

P.S. for the sallen-key ignore the other equations, just
worry about the Fc=..... one. that gives you the cutoff
frequency in hertz.
good luck

Well, I am kinda working with Synth DIY aswell, mind I guess
my creations so far have been more luck based (the Black Box
linked earlier was me rewiring a flashing LED circuit)
so....

I'll try a few of the Wiki schematics and spend some time
tomorrow working those equations out. I'm taking GCSE (and
maybe A-Level) electronics mainly to learn more about these
equations, etc.

Thanks a lot.

Yep, I give up. Just spent about 30 minutes trying to work
out a schematic and I've got pretty much nowhere. My email
is futureimage@hotmail.co.uk so feel free to send any
schemats there if you've got time to. Thanks a shitload.

The thing went for £26. The last bent Speak went for £66
and had fewer bends. Shit.
