Cutting the Mobius strip

from wikipedia:

The Möbius strip has several curious properties. If you try
to split the strip in half by cutting it down the middle
along a line parallel to its edge, instead of getting two
separate strips, it becomes one long strip with two
half-twists in it (not a Möbius strip). If you cut this one
down the middle, you get two strips wound around each other.
Alternatively, if you cut along a Möbius strip about a
third of the way in from the edge, you will get two strips;
one is a thinner Möbius strip, the other is a long strip
with two half-twists in it (not a Möbius strip). Other
interesting combinations of strips can be obtained by making
Möbius strips with two or more flips in them instead of
one. For example, a strip with three half-twists, when
divided lengthwise, becomes a strip tied in a trefoil knot.
Cutting a Möbius strip, giving it extra twists, and
reconnecting the ends produces unexpected figures called
paradromic rings.

I'm having a real hard time imagining this right now and I
plan on trying it tomorrow, but I keep running the scenario
over and over in my head. instead of getting two separate
strips, it becomes one long strip with two half-twists in it
(not a Möbius strip)
How can you not get two separate
strips? WTF.

Also: Whats the deal with Paul Laffoley? For someone who
seems so 'ahead of the times' it's really hard to find shit
on the internet about him and explanations of his ideas.
It's like one big fuckin cock-tease.

it's a cool trick, i remember trying it when i was young. i
didn't know about getting a different result when you cut
closer to one side though, that's pretty mad

a twist in the fabric of space where time becomes a loop

tried to cut it when i was little. repeated the experience a
few minutes ago, inspired by this thread. want to glue a
klein bottle now. they think it's impossible. i think
everything is possible with lots of glue.

my brain hurts trying to picture it. where's the superior
human spatial reasoning when you need it...

yes, it's a fundamental flaw in all the laws of the universe

where can i get a Möbius strip from?

my personal favourite is stealing handfulls of magnesium
from science storage rooms at school and burning them. gosh,
they're 10x brighter than the sun.

lol i just looked it up on wiki. i'm so trying this
i'm having a hard time grasping the idea that it can't
divide when cut down the center

Quite simple. Moebius strip has one half-twist, so on the
connection the "left" half becomes the "right" half (I mean
the longitudal halves, not sides) and the other way around.
Therefore, when you cut it along tthe center it just becomes
a longer strip with two connections: left -> right and right
-> left. That's how I see it.

Well if you're a GIRL then your spatial reasoning is
INFERIOR to that of a MANS. Isn't that right
\/\/oofier?
